Washington June 26 Administration leaders claim a majority for a compromise on the Roosevelt court bill while opposition vows to block votes. They say at least 54 votes exist to authorize one new justice annually for incumbents over 75 with efforts to delay or derail possible.
John W. Carruthers Sr reports his home at 501 Johnson Street was burglarized for the sixth time in 18 months. He details stolen clothing from his wife and daughter Eva, and quips that the thief should return the suit’s trousers to complete the outfit. The break ins followed a visit to a ranch near Sanderson, with windows cut and screens damaged. A prior June 10 incident at 606 East Losella Street also saw burglaries targeting clothing and gifts for Miss Ale Wilson.
Nine Eastham prison farm fugitives remained at liberty today after ten were captured. Officers hunted a man on a big bay horse accused of shooting Calvin Maxey near the prison area as officials noted no additional fugitives seen yesterday. The report also notes statewide actions by Texas Young Democrats approving Roosevelt court reform and Rangers deployment.
The coroner ruled the strange death of 51 year old Frank Reeder WPA instructor an accident. Reeder was found impaled on an iron bed post in his apartment and had muttered that he had been tortured and held for ransom before dying.
J C Wilson of Painter Bus Lines Inc earned a safety certificate from the Highway Insurance Underwriters for driving 730,880 miles between November 1935 and May 1937 with no accidents. The award bears signatures of Joe C. Carrington and W. R. Painter.
No change reported Saturday afternoon in the condition of Charles Tagliabue Jr who remains seriously ill with a sinus infection over several days. He is at his home located at 601 Andrade Street.
Partly cloudy tonight and Sunday with a high around 93 degrees yesterday and a low near 79. This morning's minimum was 77. East Texas remains cooler in the northwest and north central areas on Sunday.
June 26 murder charges filed against J C Meador and tied to a head on collision on North Chadbourne Street that killed Louis Kilmerner 66 of Fredericksburg. Meador and passenger Jack Craig were treated for injuries. Kilmerner’s body sent to Fredericksburg for funeral rites. Kilmerner was brother to Sheriff Alfred Kilnerner.
Mrs W S McLendon aged about 48 died unexpectedly Friday evening at her home in Dripping Springs. She was sister of R C G Herndon and sister in law of Mrs Oma Herndon of Del Rio. A party including Miss Flolly Herndon left Del Rio Saturday to attend the funeral services with no definite arrangements made yet.
June 26 Washington Senate committee members clash over summoning Postmaster General Farley in the steel strike mail case. Assistant Postmaster General Howes says Farley had little to do with immediate strike mail issues. Captain Mooney recounts the May 30 riot, stating police acted to prevent greater violence despite fatalities.
Two special trains with 26 coaches passed Del Rio on Saturday carrying Boy Scouts to Washington for the National Scout Jamboree. West Coast origin, arrivals 12 15 and 12 45 PM. Four Del Rio Scouts left Wednesday by San Angelo and Fort Worth. Mr and Mrs Fawcett and Orville Finigan joined for the journey.
Dr George H Garrett former health officer of Del Rio was named Reeves County health officer replacing Dr Hilliard Camp. He was chosen partly because he has no ties to any Pecos hospital. A delegation of Pecos women urged creation of a county and city health unit before the county commissioners.
In Annapolis Maryland on June 26 the second group of about a hundred Democratic congressmen visited Jefferson Island in Chesapeake Bay for an “old fashioned political picnic” with President Roosevelt. Senators Robinson of Arkansas and Tom Connally of Texas joined the event, with Connally saying he was just along for a delightful trip and would not discuss politics.
