Washington June 26 President Roosevelt urged enactment of a new wealth tax program this session but not tied to the nuisance tax bill, as House Democrats demand a separate bill to widen wealth distribution. Senate delay and an unfinished rate schedule halted action, dimming hopes for Saturday passage.
A delegation of Chamber of Commerce representatives and Del Rio businessmen will take a goodwill trip to Fort Clark on Thursday. President Roosevelt created a national youth administration under the work relief program to aid unemployed youth aged 16 to 25. The agency will fund apprenticeships in private industry and provide schooling and job opportunities, with $50,000,000 allocated. Miss Josephine Roche and Aubrey Williams will direct the effort under Harry Hopkins.
Funeral services were held in Rocksprings for Herman Fleischer 42 who died in San Antonio after an operation. He and his father Herman Fleischer Sr and brother Gus ran a large Rocksprings garage. He was born in Barksdale. Survivors include his widow Iva Fleischer father Herman Fleischer Sr brothers Gus and John Clark and sister Mrs Joe Wallace of Pottsville.
Three dead bull snakes believed among the largest in Val Verde County were found hanging from a barbed wire fence five miles north of Del Rio at the fork of the roads. County Tax Assessor-Collector Lyle S. Almond reported the largest about 10 feet long and the other two seven to nine feet, folded over a five foot fence.
The Japanese army reports five fliers dead and three planes down in two accidents at Kagamigahara base. Fossils from a Miami Roberts County dig join the Pan handle Plains historical society collection. The skull of an ancient dog and parts of a sabre tooth tiger camel horse and rhinoceros were added. Researchers from West Texas State Teachers College and University of California staff aided excavation and acquisition. The bones will be displayed at Canyon museum.
In Eagle Pass 226 voters and in Quemado Valley 104 voted Monday for the issuance of $1,858,000 Improvement Bonds. The ballots passed unanimously as residents met taxpaying and residence requirements.
The final Red Cross awards committee meeting will be held tonight at the Roswell Hotel studio to judge remaining flood relief cases. About 60 cases have closed with $750 in disbursements. National Red Cross adds $250 today. local chapter has raised $475 of its $500 quota. Carnell Hill and Rev. H Conger Jones filed loss estimates for homeowners.
Federal officials report only one tuberculosis symptom case after finishing cattle TB testing in Val Verde County. Dr. Y J Aitken led seven federal veterinarians and seven county workers, testing bulls, registered cattle, all dairy cattle, and 10 percent of range cattle.
WASHINGTON June 26 NEA Those who see Comptroller General John R. McCarl say he is preparing for a Republican presidential bid. A Nebraska movement supports him as a safe middle of the road candidate opposed to TVA and certain New Deal programs while defending the Constitution. His role as watchdog of expenditures has sparked New Deal opposition and prompted calls from Senator Norris for dismissal. his presidential hopes remain uncertain.
Judge John J. Foster remained in an unchanged but critical state Wednesday. He has been dangerously ill since Sunday at his Lovers' Lane home, with relatives arriving to be by his side. Ben F. Foster from San Antonio joined Monday, while Los Angeles visitors including L. E. Seymour and family, Martin Easton family, Jack Dillon party arrived Tuesday night.
Coleman city park, beautified under City Commissioner H. H. Scott, will open to the public within the next few days. Located at the junction of the Abilene and Baird highways, it is set to be a regional beauty spot.
Captain Richard Red Hawkins a 26 year veteran peace officer in the Del Rio area and newly appointed Texas Ranger returned to the city Tuesday afternoon for a brief visit. He was called out of town mid last week and was appointed by Gov James V. Alfred last February.
The Missouri Synod of the Lutheran Church elected Rev. Dr. J. W. Behnken of Houston as president at Cleveland, marking the first change in 24 years. Incumbent Rev. Dr. Frederick Plotenhauer of Chicago failed of re election by a narrow margin.
A new temporary bridge over the Nueces River on Highway No. 3 allows direct connections from Del Rio to nearby points for the first time since the flood. Light traffic is allowed with a 10 000 pound weight limit. Other routes to Eagle Pass San Antonio and Sonora were reopened in the days after the flood as workers repair washouts and bridges. Normal traffic expected by week’s end.
Washington dispatch reports Jesse Jones, chairman of the Reconstruction Finance Corporation, is taking a vacation in Canada to recover from a nervous disorder described as an attack of shingles. Attaches said his exact location in Canada was unknown, with Caribou cited in the latest report. He is not expected to return to Washington before after July 4.
In El Paso on June 26 a quarry blast at the Rio Grande Quarry of the Southwestern Portland Cement Co. killed Stephen Sparks a 17 year old spectator and left three workers seriously injured when dynamite exploded prematurely. Rescue crews brought in steam shovels and searched for survivors near the quarry west of the Rio Grande River.
In Amarillo on June 26, R J Murray of the Texas Farm Debt Conciliation Committee urged voluntary debt adjustments between farmers and creditors as a key recovery measure. He noted Panhandle hard times but predicted benefits from debt agreements and described new Panhandle district procedures. About 10,000 Texas farmers had been kept on ranches under Credit Administration programs.
MOSCOW today said the government rejected a German offer for a one billion mark credit to the Soyuz in exchange for raw materials including manganese and iron ore.
