Deed Would-Be Fraud Accords Delaware and Maryland Lands

Plaintiff alleges fraud or misunderstanding in a deed transfer that divested his daughter and daughter-in-law of property. He claims 330 acres in Delaware and 280 acres in Maryland were given to Harriet Miller and Libby Dapsey, respectively, with no provision for his life estate or compensation to Me Armstrong. Williams County Democrats Nominate Ticket in Montpelier

The Williams county Democrats met in Montpelier and nominated Henry Goll for representative Robert Hayer for probate judge Al Critchfield for clerk of court Frank Altman for sheriff Charles W Brannan for treasurer Fred Latiner for recorder Jacob Osman for commissioner J R Oxenrider for infirmary director. Solomon Johnson declined candidacy for probate judge after protests of Democratic conduct. Blair Haggerty withdrew after a ballot and Goll secured the nomination by acclamation amid claims the convention was dominated by a powerful figure, Lawyer Starr.

Hand Injury at Defi- Box Up Factory

Ernie Krouse a 16 year old on Harrison street suffered a severe hand cut at the Defi- Box Up factory on Saturday afternoon. The palm and fingers were badly lacerated but no major parts were severed.

Sensational divorce petition filed by Charles Long

Charles Long petitions for divorce from wife Sarah Long alleging adultery and unlawful relations with multiple men. The couple, married January 7 1892 in Cleveland, have lived in Defiance for two years and he seeks custody of their three children. He lists two named men and states Mrs Long hosted gentlemen callers at their home, knowledge obtained August 22. Winn and Hay are his attorneys.

German Day Celebrated at Napoleon Fairground

German Americans of Henry county hosted a German Day at Napoleon fairground with many from Defiance county attending. Editors Hanbold and Deindoerfer gave addresses, with speeches by Donovan and Wuebben. The Napoleon band performed and a male choir sang Vader landslider. About 1500 people attended, including Rev W H Bunge and J A Deindoerfer from the city.

Fatal Accident Claims Elderly Resident Near Payne

Morris Keller aged about 86 residing eight miles west of town was fatally injured when his buggy was thrown after his horse startled by C B Champon's automobile. He died shortly after being taken to Payne. back broken and head bruised. He had lived in the county 25 years and was highly respected by many friends.

Lightning Strikes Burn Barn and Damages Church

C S McCartney’s barn burned to the ground after a Tuesday lightning strike along with machinery worth about $2000. Insurance covers $550. McCartney resides in Washington township. The Disciple church in Grover Hill was struck in the same storm, suffering minor damage.

Six Horse Thieves Nabbed in Regional Sweep

Country marshals, farmers, and Lima police rounded up six alleged horse thieves. Alfred Whited confessed to thefts done under direction of Edward Houx and Jacob Fancier of Alger. Others named include William Nichols, Charles Kramer and two more suspects in Kalida and Portland Indiana. The gang is blamed for twenty horses stolen across Allen, Auglaize, Mercer, Ottawa and Hardin counties in two weeks.

Negligence suit over embankment guard rail death of Leroy Carpenter

A negligence action seeks $5000 from the Defiance county board of commissioners claiming absence of a guard rail or fence along an embankment led to the March 28, 1904 drowning of Leroy Carpenter and Albert G Moore. Carpenter, 17, was educated and teaching at the college. his father Lyman A Carpenter named executor Aug 9. The embankment runs 600 feet long, 6 to 8 feet above bottom land, with floodwaters obscuring the road. Ansberry and Farrell are attorneys for the plaintiff. Additional notes list social visits and a barn fire at John Strauser’s property.

City Sinking Fund Trustees Pay Off Bonds and Interest

The Board of Sinking Fund Trustees discharged $7000 in bonds and $735.23 in accrued interest, leaving $7000 on hand to apply to future bond maturities. This year they paid $15,000 of the city’s bonded debt. at this rate it would take twenty years to clear $300,000. Since adopting the municipal code, efforts to reduce debt have increased, with savings from interest and six month fund allocations. Within a year most paving bonds will be paid except for the Holgate Avenue project.

Westinghouse plans new trolley line from Wauseon to Paulding

New York dispatch reports Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing plans a survey based trolley route from Wauseon through Napoleon and Defiance to Paulding to connect with Toledo lines. The project aims to link to Toledo via Wauseon with financing presumably expected from prominent local promoters.

Land Lottery Draw Allows Streicher Big Selection Window

George Streicher of the city earns the 4662nd chance in Utah Indian reservation land lottery. With 10 000 allotments, he must file for a 160 acre section Oct 14 and may choose mining or farming tracts if drawing before Oct 28. He will reside in Utah, aided by a large map from Jennings & McCaulley.

Social events mark Holgate area gatherings and a German Lutheran wedding

Mrs H T Kintigh hosted a party for her nieces at Holgate avenue. James Woodward hosted a Smart Set dance at the Citizens in honor of Miss Grace Hale with twenty guests and refreshments. Mr Zeschke celebrated his twenty fifth anniversary with cuff buttons from friends. The U B church Christian Endeavor group enjoyed a garden social at Thos Pickering’s home with Japanese lanterns, music, games and light refreshment. Attendees included Miss Outcault, Miss McGloughlin, Miss Deatrick, Mr Twitchell, Mrs Linthicum, Mrs Hammer and Miss Twitchel. Adolph Fischer wed Natallie Duerk at St John’s German Lutheran church with a large attendance and reception on Wilhelm street. Minnie Houghton hosted a euchre party at her Holgate avenue home for Miss Morrison, Mr Bowman, Miss Carter, with forty-two guests and prizes for both ladies and gentlemen. Out-of-town guests included Miss Outcault, Mrs Linthicum, Miss Rock, and Mrs McLaughlin.

Musical afternoon honors Miss Twitchell at Squire home

About fifty guests attended a Wednesday afternoon musicale at the Jefferson Street home in honor of Miss Twitchell of Mansfield. Mrs. Alfred Wood contributed twice and Mrs. Wood sang bright arias. Howard Twitchell played violin with refined tone. Charles Squire accompanied on piano delivering a varied program including Etude and The Lark.
