Emma Gray longtime resident dies after illness

Emma Gray born February 21 1855 died September 27 1905 at home on Holgate Ave Defiance. She leaves husband Glen Gray and daughter Fannie with siblings and friends recalling her charity gentleness and faithfulness to First Presbyterian Church Sorosis and Ladies Aid. Funeral from the Gray home Saturday at 2 pm with ministers officiating and burial in Riverside cemetery.

Rev Rhodes Transferred From Defiance To Shelby

The Toledo and Lima districts conference closed in Hicksville with Rev P O Rhodes reassigned from Defiance to Shelby for a larger pastorate and salary. Rev J W Lower will replace him in Defiance. other appointments include Lima and Toledo district pastors and elders. A long-time Defiance pastor, Rhodes leaves amid church gains and local esteem.

Force to be Increased at United States Express Co Shops

The repair shops in Defiance will double their force within weeks as wagons are shipped for repairs and staff expands. Lincoln Tate and other officials will visit next week to plan further scale up and facility enlargement. The Linthicum-Schlosser factory purchase is praised for offering ample space and labor peace enabling rapid progress toward in house wagon manufacture.

Rev J M Mills Retires From Active Methodist Ministry

The St Marys Leader reports Rev J M Mills of Lima retires from active service after a long tenure as Lima district presiding elder. Despite opposition and rumors, Mills remained loyal to the bishop. He was slated for Mendon in Mercer county, a small congregation, marking a new phase after his Lima leadership.

Stabbed farmer attacked by man linked to Toledo murder suspect

John B Meyer a farmer near Kalida was seriously stabbed by a man believed to be Joe Nipper, wanted in Toledo for murder. The assailant, calling himself Crane, was bound over to court for $1,000 bail after being arrested by Union Township authorities.

Arson Suspected In Fire That Destroyed Stryker Blocks

Fire originated in the rear of the vacant Pequet building after an hour long blaze that consumed five business blocks in Stryker last Monday night. A witness described a small flame before 1 am and investigators consider cigar stub or other ignition. the state fire marshal may examine. Separately, William Schmaltz sues Union Central Life for $1000 on Bodenburg policy. Defiance engineers survey entry routes and grade for a possible new streetcar access from North Defiance to Harrison Street, with a planned incline and bridge connections.
