Oratorical Contest crowns Don Switzer at Defiance High

The fourth annual Oratorical contest at Defiance High School chose Donald Switzer to represent the school at Bowling Green on May tenth after a strong showing by seven contestants Ruth Hoffman Louise Jordan Gerald Deveaux Frederick Thompson Harry Kirk Clarence Webb and Switzer. Switzer spoke on Modern Heroism urging a modern view of character and public service while the audience enjoyed fine music from the school orchestra chorus and trio.

Defiance boy Bruce Reynolds shines at Conservatory recital

Bruce Reynolds a Defiance youth studying at the New England Conservatory of Music Boston played Mendelssohn Trio in C minor for pianoforte violin and violoncello at a pupils recital on April 20. He was joined by Miss Anna McLaury Farmington Maine and Robert Austin Providence Rhode Island. Audience praise reflected the thorough training of the trio. Reynolds is among many conservatory violin students receiving specialized instruction through the Conservatory orchestra led by George W Chadwick and coached by Boston Symphony Orchestra members.

Social dances and nuptials fill Defiance week

About forty couples enjoyed a National Union social on Thursday evening. The Thirteen club was entertained April 24 with Mrs. MacRaynolds hosting on North Clinton Street, with Mrs. Stonebraker, Mrs. Craven and Mrs. Patterson contributing. David Oliver Lower, an employee of the Defiance Machine shops, married April 24 to Miss Martha Advirl Bidlack at St. John's Reformed church parsonage. About seventy-five couples attended a dancing party April 24 in National Union hall honoring the young ladies who assisted at the K. of C. banquet, with a buffet luncheon and social hour. At the bride’s parents’ home in Tiffin township, Lloyd C. Peterson and Emma Frances Stock were betrothed April 24. Henry Foss and Anna Sauer celebrated their fortieth wedding anniversary April 24 on Wayne Street, with clerks and neighbors in attendance. Prof. Louis C Kline lectured on The Poetry of a Strenuous Life at Defiance College, with a small but engaged audience.

An Interesting and Chatty Letter at Sea 1907

A passenger diary from April 5 to April 12 1907 aboard a steamer chronicles delayed departure, loaded ship with 61 first cabin 300 second class and 700 steerage, friendly notes from Virgil Deatrick and Miss Fouke, letters misrouted but recovered, a lively voyage with music dinners and a dance. The writer narrates encounters with Miss Maud Daniels and Mrs Schultz, sea conditions, and reflections on home as Cherbourg nears.

High land principal reports fatal self-inflicted gunshot in farm incident

Edward Freeman, about 60, a longtime local worker on the Dave Fulmer farm, shot himself with a revolver on Thursday afternoon after returning from the Kopp school. Lon Gill, Highland township principal, led to the scene as Justice Zackrish conducted an inquest. Freeman's body was laid to rest at Ayersville cemetery Friday.
