Knights Celebrate Anniversary With Music and Dance

Castle Hall of Hancock lodge Knights of Pythias filled Friday evening for the annual anniversary. Thompson's orchestra opened the program with a selection, welcomed by Dey Ayers. Miss Blanche Doster and others performed, followed by piano duets and a soprano solo by Miss Biuncie Doster. The event included dancing, punch and wafers, and visitors returned from travels while local members announced steady recoveries and new positions.

Social and club notes from Defiance city churches and groups

A banquet by St Marys church ladies drew praise for its quality and attendance. The German ME church Ladies Aid met March 13 at Mrs King s home with dainty refreshments. Bridge club audience at Mrs Sutphens enjoyed games and trophies awarded to Mrs Clark and guest favor to Mrs Butler. Tourists club hosted Miss Eugenia Ralston. WV Adams won a bonbon box for the contest then joined Brown s for lunch. Thirteen club met at Mrs Reynolds March 13 with a talk on sanitary conditions in Defiance led by Mrs Savage. song by Mrs McReynolds and refreshments followed. Sorosis gathered with hosts Mrs Kittner. program on music featured Verdi topics and a round table led by Mrs Butler and Miss Kittner. The girls Mission band of the Presbyterian church held a St Patrick s social at the Ferguson home on Wayne street with Maude Foust leading a program and Miss Foust receiving a potted plant. decorations included shamrock and pipes and proceeds supported the society.

Defiance Boosters Organizes To Promote City Growth

The Defiance booster group formed at a Wednesday meeting with officers led by President D. W. McKnight and Vice President Peter Weigerding. The aim is to improve Defiance through committees, fund raising, and community events including a planned Easter smoker with speeches. Over sixty businessmen are enrolled, pledging city advancement and a unified effort to make Defiance a leading Northwestern Ohio hub.

L C Newell Dead In New York At 50

L C Newell cousin of Mrs James Hopple of this city died February 20 at his home on the Mile Strip New York. He was born in Colden Erie county moved to Brant as a boy and married Emogene Sisson November 27 1878. He served eight years as justice of the peace and helped organize local lodges. He leaves his wife and his mother. He was active in town and party affairs and known as a kind neighbor.

Engineers Submit Favorable Reports on Short Line Extension

The Electrics Two engineering parties filed favorable reports after discreetly surveying the Cincinnati Toledo and Detroit Short Line. They expect important movements soon. Indiana Columbus and Eastern railway engineers J. B. Ferguson and G. A. Crayton arrived Wednesday and survey the proposed extension.

Canal contracts let for Miami and Erie and Ohio canals

State board of public works awarded extensive improvements on the Miami and Erie and Ohio canals. Total contracts amount to 40,338.30 for the Ohio canal and 36,264.73 for the Miami and Erie. Several lock rebuilds fixed, with Bucklands lock No. 34 and others, bids below estimates, some bids rejected for insufficient appropriation. New cement bids favored Alma and Alpha brands. Inspection date set for Friday, March 29, for Co. G and the Sixth Regimental band. Incorporation of Maumee Cooperage and Lumber Co. filed in Columbus with 15,000 capital. Dr. J M Mills to focus on commercial work after insurance agency consolidation in Lima.

Daniel Dietrich Dead After Stroke at Defiance Station

Daniel Dietrich proprietor of the ashery in North Defiance suffers a paralytic stroke while at the B and O station en route to Hicksville. He collapses about 2 p.m. and is taken home. previously ill seven weeks with prior strokes. Born in Coburg Germany February 15 1844, he settled in Defiance in 1872 and ran alkali salt manufacture. He leaves a wife Lottie and two children Christina and George. Funeral held Monday at 2 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran. interment Riverside.

Admiral Kirtley Promotes Ohio Canal Modernization

The Columbus Press Post notes signs the Ohio canal system will be used for new aims after recent General Assembly appropriations. A 50 mile Miami and Erie stretch between Defiance and Toledo will host a gasoline powered freight line. A company is formed to begin operations after public works repairs. Admiral Kirtley, a board member, champions repairs and canal modernization, criticizing Cincinnati’s share of funds.

Abandoned Plant Goods Sold by Star Skirt Company

The Star Skirt Manufacturing Co. has abandoned manufacturing and is disposing of their machinery. Part of the machinery has been purchased by Defiance Glove and Mitten Works and the Defiance Tick Mitten Co. The Methodist church services last Sunday were interesting and largely attended. Julius J.
