Chautauqua Talent Attracts Broad Lineup for Season

The Chautauqua association reports a strong season lineup including Baxter Concert Company Herbert Sprague and Hon John B Wise among others with 140 season tickets sold and a goal of 200. A canvass by six committees will push subscriptions as locals attend sermons and lectures while community notes report visits from M E Rodgers Ed Conlin J W Jones and others. A fire in the Sherman Blanchard residence caused a two story frame home to burn with losses estimated 1500 to 1600 and no insurance.

Washington's birthday celebrations fill Defiance county pearls

Kappa Phi girls hosted by Misses Lelia and Lydia Coy on Wayne street and St Marys parochial school children marked Washington's birthday with programs. Clubs and societies from Holgate to Wayne streets hosted elegant suppers, luncheon and games, featuring flags, bunting, cherry tree centerpieces, and patriotic desserts.

Library project ends with surplus used for grounds

Building committee reports a $96 unexpended balance from charity subscriptions and turns it over to the library board to fix the surrounding grounds. Attendees include architect Mahburie of Ft Wayne and builders Baker and Baktes. a banquet followed at the Commercial club rooms.

Defiance Pioneer Carl Biede Dies After Long Illness

Carl Frederick William Biede a Defiance pioneer died Sunday morning at his farm east of the city after a years long illness. Born in 1821 in Hanover Germany he came to America in 1848 and settled in Defiance in 1852 entering the hardware business. He helped found St Pauls Lutheran church and retired to farm life thirty years ago. He is survived by his widow and daughter Louise Heer degan along with nine grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Funeral was private at 2 pm Wednesday.

Several case notes include Milton Cordry v Ruebl appeal, E J Bell fined 35 dollars and jailed but released then fled, Leonard v Bailey attachment dispute over insurance, Cincinnati Gas Coal Mining Co. v Dohoney verdict for defendant, marriage license granted to Cloyd Sewell and Clara Coy, C F Price v Lavina Gillespie retried, Peter Le Cupp pleads guilty to assault and battery with 5 dollar fine and 60 days in the workhouse suspended on good behavior, guardian appointed for Caristiana Hertel, Rolla Rex and Nora Lash granted.

Wagon Incident on Perry Street Ends with Damaged Buggy

John G Weber loading wire near Holgate Pike. his wagon and a mule team escape collision until Perry Street where they tear through, overturn a buggy at Cunningham house. The mule bears the impact with minor scratches while Weber incurs only slight loss from the wrecked buggy. Nick Jestinger nearby had a horse hitched.

Knights and Ladies of the Maccabees Celebrate Eighth Anniversary

The Maccabee events in Florida marked their February 22 anniversary with an all day celebration. About 300 gathered in town to enjoy food andmock meals, a dramatic ladies performance, a gentlemen’s act, and an evening literary program. General Record Keeper Scott of Norwalk and General Auditor Edgar spoke, followed by dancing. the 1907 anniversary was long remembered.
