Fitting Tribute Paid Our Dead Heroes

A civic observance marks flowers strewn on graves and a parade through town led by the Bishop Post G A R and veterans groups. A full opera house heard speeches by Mayor Crowe and A N Wilcox, with cadets, bands, and children performing marching art and songs.

College Commencement Recitals Highlight Athenian Program

Audiences at the college auditorium enjoyed two piano recitals during commencement week. Mildred Corbett performed Beethoven Sonata op 81, MacDowell Shadow Dance, and Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodie No 6 with Caroline Cantley as contralto. Liliane Deveaux offered Moschele Moschelee Concerto op 58, La Chasse by Heller, and Rigoletto by Liszt with Whitney on second piano. Lennie Gillam to present future recital. Anniversary Program of the Athenian Literary Society planned for this evening.

Decoration Day Gun Club Shoot Draws Thirty Participants

Defiance Gun club's Decoration Day shoot drew about thirty entries from local towns and cities including Toledo Hicksville Dupont Napoleon Ft Wayne Muncie Ind and Chicago NL. The event ran from 10 30 a m to end of day with lunch break and featured fifteen contests with two Waverly double barrelled hammerless shotguns as prizes. Grand average winner was W Bricker Hicksville with an average of 91 percent and G G Williamson Muncie took 20 of 25 birds for second prize.

High School Victorious In One Sided Baseball Contest

Defiance Falls to Bryan 14 to 4 in Baseball

Defiance High School suffered a 14 to 4 defeat at Bryan with star pitcher Morris missing the game. Devaux subbed, Morris shone in center field with several catches, and Bryan fans mobbed Defiance players after the game amid lingering bad feelings.

President in Defiance During Quiet Stop

President Roosevelt briefly stopped in Defiance on Friday evening after speaking in Indiana and Michigan. The train was switched to Baltimore & Ohio No. 6 at Auburn Junction, where a militia unit fired three volleys as he delivered a short speech, with an expected larger crowd if the stop had been publicized.
