A civic observance marks flowers strewn on graves and a parade through town led by the Bishop Post G A R and veterans groups. A full opera house heard speeches by Mayor Crowe and A N Wilcox, with cadets, bands, and children performing marching art and songs.
Audiences at the college auditorium enjoyed two piano recitals during commencement week. Mildred Corbett performed Beethoven Sonata op 81, MacDowell Shadow Dance, and Liszt Hungarian Rhapsodie No 6 with Caroline Cantley as contralto. Liliane Deveaux offered Moschele Moschelee Concerto op 58, La Chasse by Heller, and Rigoletto by Liszt with Whitney on second piano. Lennie Gillam to present future recital. Anniversary Program of the Athenian Literary Society planned for this evening.
Defiance Gun club's Decoration Day shoot drew about thirty entries from local towns and cities including Toledo Hicksville Dupont Napoleon Ft Wayne Muncie Ind and Chicago NL. The event ran from 10 30 a m to end of day with lunch break and featured fifteen contests with two Waverly double barrelled hammerless shotguns as prizes. Grand average winner was W Bricker Hicksville with an average of 91 percent and G G Williamson Muncie took 20 of 25 birds for second prize.
East Side Meat Market advertises buying and selling cattle hogs sheep and poultry. The Kahlo Building located on East Hopkins Street Defiance Ohio offers fresh and salted meats in the city.
Steel for the Indiana, Columbus and Eastern railway arrives as graders reach Second street. Poles for crossings 45 and 50 feet are mostly in while the Toledo Wabash and St. Louis line begins grading from Neapolis toward Toledo. Contract details include Atlantic Construction Co. and C. W. Ryan & Co. supplies, with labor scarce and Normans shipped from Chicago for grading.
A Thursday baseball slate shows the High School team routing the College nine 10 to 0 as errors and lack of practice hurt the College. Dixon pitched well but the outcome favored the High School. Batteries Morss Hockman Dixon Foltz.
Defiance High School suffered a 14 to 4 defeat at Bryan with star pitcher Morris missing the game. Devaux subbed, Morris shone in center field with several catches, and Bryan fans mobbed Defiance players after the game amid lingering bad feelings.
Mrs. Joseph Shondel returned to her Toledo home Thursday evening. Mrs. Mulholland of Carey visits the city at her son H. B. Mulholland's home. George Weisenburger on Juliet street injured fingertips in a pinch between iron. Mrs. Frank Heinlein travels to Crawford county to visit aged mother and relatives for two Miss Besse Powell is elected president of National Park Seminary alumni association in Washington DC. Fred Zeschke of Second and Douglas streets suffered a crushed right hand at the American Steel Package Co. plant with amputation at the first joint. doctors Ury and Reynolds performed the operation.
National Union closes its season of social dances with about fifty couples and a fine banquet. Marguerite Kegel entertains a group of girls. four girls tie for honors with Lucy Cheney winning a souvenir spoon. Mrs. P J Shannon hosts guests. Mrs Vogel of Fostoris attends. progressives and favors awarded. Dr and Mrs W S Powell plan a ten day journey to Atlantic City and Philadelphia for medical association events and alumni reunion. At 208 East Second Street, Harry Blanchard and Emma B Prickett wed with a small ceremony. couple to Toledo for residence.
President Roosevelt briefly stopped in Defiance on Friday evening after speaking in Indiana and Michigan. The train was switched to Baltimore & Ohio No. 6 at Auburn Junction, where a militia unit fired three volleys as he delivered a short speech, with an expected larger crowd if the stop had been publicized.
Roy D. Lower returned to Chicago Thursday following a two weeks visit with his mother Mrs. Etta Lower.
