A 1902 Defiance council inherited a near bankruptcy with a $34,612.65 balance after overdrafts, funds drained by water and street allocations, and unpaid bonds. Officials debated borrowing $10,000 to $18,000 and reallocating water funds to stabilize operations while pursuing retrenchment in city departments.
James A Kitchel died at home on Francis Street at 8 p m June 25 1902 from pneumonia and heart trouble He was born October 19 1851 in Ohio county Michigan and lived in the city 27 years working 17 years in the restaurant business and 10 years as Postal Telegraph supervisor He served as city clerk and township clerk He married Carrie Baker in 1875 and Sonia Roxey Kitchel Cooksie of Hibbard Indiana was with him at death His first wife died 1887 later married Mary Dickson and then Winnie Andrews in 1900 They had a son James Edward Kitchel seven months old Also survived by sisters Emiline Taft Toledo and Eliza Taft Cleveland and relative Mrs G D Shepherd Hillsdale Funeral held June 27 at 2 30 pm from M E church Rev Bethards officiating Riverside cemetery interment He belonged to several secret societies in this city.
A horse owned by John Schooley broken shafts on Clinton street caused a wild run past Brown's bakery and the State Bank striking a court house fence and narrowly missing pedestrians. A second runaway on Clinton street and further incidents accompanied the busy morning. Several accidents and local notices follow including licenses and a farm sale.

Kilmer Grant, son of Frank Grant of Monroe township Putnam county, was attacked by a swarm of bees while working with his team in a field. The bees stung him at least a hundred times as he fled home where his wife freed him with water. A physician attended him and his condition was feared to be fatal though Mrs. Grant was stung many times but not seriously harmed.

Jacob Ambs Jr of East Defiance suffered a severe scalp wound and back bruises after being knocked from a Cincinnati Northern train near the B and O Junction. He was unconscious at first but revived and received medical attention before being sent home to Seneca Street.
Mr Frank Heinlein of Defiance Ohio endorses Dr A W Chases Nerve Pills from Woodwards Drug Store as a tonic that restored his health energy and vigor quickly. He says the medicine made him all right again with ease.
