Maumee Valley Pioneer Association Holds 37th Convention

The Maumee Valley Pioneer Association met at Fort Grounds in Defiance on Thursday for its 37th annual convention led by Acting President Justin A. Tyler. The gathering featured remarks on local history, a portrait unveiling of A. P. Edgerton, relics discussions, and plans for historic places and possible incorporation, with a closing afternoon of reminiscences and social events.

Death of Mrs Myers after operation at Clinton street home

Mrs H W Myers of 848 Clinton street died Friday evening after an operation to remove an intestinal obstruction. Born Helen Gould in Syracuse in 1841 she lived in Defiance since 1876. She leaves ten children eight living, her husband Dr H W Myers and two sisters. Funeral was held Monday at her home with Rev E D Whitlock directing. Remains were taken to Toledo for burial in Forest City cemetery.

Pioneers Association Discusses Block Houses

At the Fort Ground experience meeting the Pioneers Association debated removing block houses. After impassioned speeches by Levi Wilder and others a vote by those present favored leaving the block houses in statu quo.

Hotel Defiance closes amid losses and packing up

The Hotel Defiance was closed to the public Monday and its operations are being packed up due to ongoing losses. Judge F. L. Hay reports his son Leslie will undergo another operation after an X ray and hospital stay at St. Joseph's. Dr. Beck to perform the procedure later this week. Dr. H. W. Myers and family return from Toledo after the funeral of Rev. E. D. Whitlock. Mrs. Barbara Schlembach, 63, suffers paralysis with poor prognosis. her son Joseph returns home from Wapakoneta to find her in a declining condition.

A letter dated Aug 16 1901 from Highland township Missouri resident William Arthur, high private of H Co 950 describes James Kilbourn with mixed praise and speculation about his army rank and political ties. The missive includes a parable about two sheep that contrasts a simple brother with a clever one, ending with a somber note about Benny.

Fullmer Hill Wedding Tallies Local Nuptials

Miss Edna Fullmer and Lon Hill wed at the bride's Highland township home with a small invite list. The ceremony was led by Grant W Speer of Hicksville Church of Christ. A wedding supper followed and the couple planned a weeklong Pan American exposition trip to Buffalo.

Fierce Fire Destroys Diehl's Brewing Pitching Yard

A fire at 3:15 a m hit the Christ Diehl Brewing plant damaging the pitching yard and office building. About 350 kegs and 75 barrels burned while books were saved. Diehls estimate loss at 5000 with 2500 insured and plan rebuilding after loss adjustment.

Doctor Nettie Belau Improves. Return Home Delayed

Word from the hospital in Fort Wayne Indiana reports Dr. Nettie Belau improving but still a long recovery before returning to duties. Hers Fodie and Winnie have closed her office and moved to Auglaize ship. One of the girls will go to Wayne later this week to assist in nursing the doctor back to health.

Infant Schmunk Christening Highlighted At Home

The infant son of Mr and Mrs Schmunk of this city and the Schmunk family of Colton were christened at the home of the former by Rev Karl Spannuth of Johns Lutheran church. The child was named Fred Augustus with sponsors Mr and Mrs Calk of Payne. A fine china service followed. Present were Mrs Schmunk and her son John Paulding Mr and Mrs Hen Weichman of Jewell and Mrs Rinehart Franzdorf.
