Detroit Aug 16 The International Typographical union struck out a law clause restricting non-printers to their current craft subdivision. The laws committee proposed amending to bar apprentices in machine offices unless they are journeyman printers or Typographical union members, with an exception for the last six months of apprenticeship. The convention also voted to continue annual sessions.
Prominent colored Masons of Ohio met in Springfield and denounced President McKinley for silence on lynching and his failure to commission colored officers. Speakers included R. W. Tyler Columbus Charles Marshall Cleveland W. H. Parham Cincinnati and William Hunley Toledo. They warned of boycotting the polls and tasked W. H. Parham to distribute an address to colored voters. Rennes August 16 M Labori is improving and out of danger though confined to his back. Life returning to the leg once believed paralyzed. He has no fever and continues to discuss the trial. His wife has stayed by his side since he was wounded and is relieved by the doctors hopeful he will be on his feet before the trial ends.
In Rennes on August 16 Labori reported that while he lay wounded on the ground assailants emptied his coat pockets and tried to steal his wallet containing court martial papers and notes for the Mercier cross examination.
Paris august 16 leading European Jews organize a meeting in Switzerland to form an international association for their defense and to safeguard Jews in France after the Dreyfus court martial concludes.
Washington announces two additional shiploads of supplies for Porto Rico. The Evelyn will sail from New York next Friday with cargo. The government transport McClellan is set to depart for San Juan Wednesday week. The auxiliary cruiser Resolute may be used if needed.
