At the roof of engine House at electric Plant Barned Friday evening there was an ugly fire at the Power House of the Defiance Light and Street railway Plant on third Street Friday evening and but for the promptness and vigorous work of the fire boys at the Central station there would not have been any thing left but the Walls of the station. When the Price of Oil took its great Boom the management of the company stopped the use of that com modify As fuel an i substituted Coal but As there is now a stake among the miners the company was forced to resort to the use of Oil again and manager Faben said they expected to turn it on in the morning. From the Best information at hand we judge that there was an explosion of some kind preceding the Blaze Many persons in the neighbourhood claim that they heard it. The writer knows that a terrible column of smoke shot up out of the building before the flames came through the roof and it was the first thought then that there was burning Oil beneath the roof. The main part of the roof was wiped out at a breath and an explosion of boilers seemed eminent the fire boys however did not shirk their duty and were in the boiler room when the roof commenced to fall in. The heavy timbers broke the safety valves and that relieved the boilers. For a time the situation was critical and the residents in the neighbourhood expected to get a Lively shaking up. The fire department did splendid work and soon had the fire under control. The fire did not reach the engine and Dynamo room and no damage was done there $2,000 it is thought will cover the loss. The building was insured. The boys from the b. Amp o. Station made the run at the end of a Dray and got on the grounds in time to throw some water. Frank Hale of Hicksville aged about 22 years having had some trouble with the paternal head of the family went to the barn in the rear end of the lot and securing a rope he tied one end of it around his body just under his arms and then pulled the other end up under his coat and tied it to an overhanging beam and then placing himself upon a Box he waited the arrival of his father. When the old gentleman arrived upon the scene he dropped his head and leaped from the Box. The old gentleman was not slow to grasp the situation and taking a barrel stave he sailed into his pouting calf and basted him with such vigor that the Young Man will take his meals standing for at least a week. The Young men of Hicksville should profit by the experience of Young Hale and if the spirit prompts them to put up a joke on Tho a old Man a they should first fortify themselves in such a manner that there will be no Chance of his turning it on them.
