At the following special was published in the Toledo commercial this morning Homer Meacham of Toledo state canal superintendent while attempting to Board an outgoing Baltimore amp Ohio train at 6 of clock last evening lost his footing and fell beneath the wheels. His left foot was crushed off before he could be rescued. He was taken to the Hospital and his leg amputated just below the knee. At Midnight he recovered consciousness 1 and was resting easy. Supt Homer Meachem i Ead. That it is possible to provide for the free coinage of Silver Aud yet maintain the party of the two metals by leaving the unit or measure of value where we now find it fixed by the rules of Commerce that is the Gold Dollar. He would then re monetize the Silver by an act of Cri Gresa an i give it Legal tender properties coining at the ratio of 16 to i making 37 grains of pure Silver in each Dollar. Establish by act of Congress a commission on coinage to be continually in session with duties which Are not necessary to give in detail but in keeping with the practical carrying oat of the free coinage proposition. When Silver Bullion is presented to the government mint for coinage into Money this coinage commission to ascertain its value in Gold on the markets in the world of that Day and make a record of it giving to the presenter of the Bullion its value in Silver dollars or Silver certificates counting each Silver Dollar Worth one Hundred cents in Gold and retain the Ballance of the Silver Bullion As a Reserve and place it on Deposit in government repository of Bullion. The Man who would present one Hundred thousand dollars Worth of Silver Bullion it value measured that Day in the commercial markets of the world would present Silver Bullion enough at the present Price of Silver to make two Hundred thousand Silver dollars of 371j grains fineness which is now the size of our Silver Dollar. Under this arrangement he would have bul 100,000 Silver dollars or Silver certificates the Ballance of the Silver Bullion being one half to go on Deposit with the government As a Reserve to make the other half float by the Side of Gold and not disturb the commercial relations of Gold. On the question of the value of Silver or. Dewitt says Silver Bullion after a re monetization act could not decline. It must Advance in value on the markets. The reason of its present Low Price is that it has no coinage value and is used Only for the arts hence it Market is so narrow and hampered that its prise is pounded Down to the lowest possible Point. When you commence coining it into Money and keeping up this magnificent Reserve it opens up a new use and Market and the Price under the unwritten Law of Commerce the Supply remaining practically the same and the demand much greater must Advance. I could reason further by opening up the new Fields of Enterprise and the demand for employment of labor by this new Money which would increase its Bullion value but Why reason further when it is an axiom adhered to by scientists in political Economy on Money that a Metal used As Money and de monetized depreciates in value and when re monetized increases in value judge Latty dead. Special to Republican express. Columbus. O., May 30. Last evening As Homer Meacham of Toledo superintendent of the canal was attempting to Board an outgoing passenger train at Zanesville that was crowded to the guards he was pushed off and fell under the wheels just a Gen. Brown and or. C. J. Thompson drove up to take the fast line train. Or. Thompson identified or. Meacham and had him taken to the City Hospital where he died this morning at 2 of clock. Meacham a right leg was Cut off below the knee and the Shock killed him. Gresham train remains accompanied by Tho president and Cabinet passed Here at 8 a in. The special train bearing the remains of Secretary of state Gresham passed through the City Over the a amp o. At 8 a. In. May 30, the train was made up of five cars. The casket bearing the remains was very handsomely and beautifully draped with Flowers. President Cleveland and Cabinet were aboard the train and were met by hundreds of citizens. An Able Man and leading citizen gathered to the fathers. Congressman elect de with a plan. From the Columbus state journal Hon. F. B. Dewitt congressman from 5th District has his hands full just now in putting in his crops but he has taken time to give his views on the financial question in a Way that cannot fail to command attention. His plan has the Novelty of being entirely new at least. Speaking of the idea advanced by Harvey in his now famous work Quot coins financial school a that the Way to maintain the parity Between Gold and Silver is to make the Silver Dollar of 3711 grains of pure Silver the unit of value and Gold to be coined into Money at a ratio to be changed if necessary from time to time if the commercial parity to the Legal ratio shall be affected by the action of foreign countries or. Dewitt says you Start out to Coin Silver Bullion with 371j Gram to the Dollar and put the Money into circulation and you find that Gold will not circulate because one Gold Dollar is Worth two Silver dollars. Your next step under the proposition is to Call in the Gold Money and remint it. What size do you make the Gold Dollar in order to maintain the commercial parity by Law just about one half of the size you had. What then is the ratio Between Gold and Silver ? about practically speaking 32 to i your 16 to one is destroyed and you Are afloat in an open financial sea. The congressman is of the opinion headache cured in 20 minutes by or. Milos pain a one cent a a to druggist Captain Bushnell. As for Captain Bushnell personally he Well deserves the Honor that has been placed in his hands by the action of the convention. To is a True Blue Republican willing and eager to do his share in every Campaign and we believe his nomination will be ratified by the people at the polls in Novena her. He deserves Success and we believe he will achieve it. The thousands of friends of judge Nash while bowing to the decree of the convention express the deepest regret on account of his defeat. He made a Manly racs but the fortunes of politics were against him and he was de rated. He comes out of the contest with the regard of Bis Well wishers All Over the state who would have been delighted to see him elevated to the High Pinnacle of governor a place that he deserves by reason of party services and personal Ohio state journal.
