We understand very Well that it is common in cases of this kind to refer them to a referee or referees but we violate no Confidence when we say to the Democrat that it would have suited the people of Defiance county just As Well if judge Snook could have tried this Case himself. We make this statement with a full understanding of the feeling among the people with the kind Liest feeling for j Edge Snook and the deepest respect not Only for him but for the gentleman who have been chosen to act As referees in the Case. The people Are acquainted with the judge and they have the fullest Confidence in his ability they know him to be a just Man and May be excused for desiring that he sit in a Case in which their interests Are so closely indent fied. It will be noted that right upon the heels of the assignment of this Case the editor of the Paulding Democrat receives a reliable private information that the state is going to be a horsed that the verdict is to be against the taxpayers of Defiance county. It is not known from what source the information comes but the very fact that this claim was thus confidently made in Advance of the hearing of the Case was what induced this paper to ask if it was in the province of judge Snook to do so to appoint a capable Man to assist or to look after the interest of the tax payers in this matter. R. D. Webster of the news and Democrat and l. Conkle have been digging in the records every since notice of official robbery in the county was Given. The men in the Fields in the shops in Trade in the professions the Patrimony of widows and orphans have All been taxed that the tribute to gambling Hells and the like might be kept up by men who had been raised to positions of Honor by a trusting constituency. Grand juries have been called and though they have been charged by the court in heroic term they have come from their seclusion without a single indictment when All the world knew that the Book of official robbery was open to the Public and could not have been hidden from them unless barred out of the grand jury room. Men goaded to desperation by the furious protestation of neighbors who have Felt outraged by such results have been driven to the declaration despite their oaths of secrecy that the grand jury men were not to blame for such conditions. This was at a time when the prosecuting attorney knew there was a sworn statement extant made by treasurer w. O. Barney that was absolute proof of embezzlement proof that the funds of the county had been loaned in every direction and in direct violation of Law. More than that the prosecutor bad asked that the court charge that the men who had borrowed this Mon y were equally guilty with the official who had loaned it. Ashen judge Snook had delivered his charge men swarmed the lobbies of the court House and it is the presumption that the prosecutor then Aud there received orders from individuals outside the court As to what he must and what he should not do. In time the grand jury returned to the court room without Ever considering the Case it had been sent to investigate and was a third time sent Back to the jury room by the court. The Ohio state journal in considering toe political situation in Ohio says that the election of a legislature this fall will be a conspicuous part of the political affairs of the year. The next legislature will t Lect a successor to Calvin s. By ice and the question As to whether the United states Senate will be Republican or democratic May tinge on the results in Ohio. Last Spring the state journal made a poll of the legislature and found almost a unanimous sentiment for Hon. J. B. Foraker for senator in the event that the republicans capture the next legislature. A number of the members of the last legislature will be returned to Tho next one. The sentiment of Mckinley for president Aud Foraker for senator seems to be gaining strength each Day. At present every Bien Points to the election of a Republican legislature. The secret mines and Bugaboo which have lately been sprung Are not Likely to operate against the weal of the Republican party this fall. The most ominous sign which i a been discovered is that this is the Fate d sixth year. It is a remarkable fact that the republicans have lost the state and legislature every sixth year since War times. This argument however belongs More to the realm of the a doubting to Mases than to the realm of substantial facts. It should not be forgotten however that senator Brice is out for re election. He i3 already in evidence in the close counties and will turn every Stone to make the next legislature democratic. It will be a matter of much interest to know who or. Brice chooses for his Captain in Defiance county. Some time ago or c. E. Slocum of this City made a gift of $50,00 1 to the Ohio Weslyan University at Dele Ware.
