Joseph Perkins a noted philanthropist died in Saratoga New York last week. Born in Warren Ohio his father General Simon Perkins was a leading figure in that state. He led the National Bank of Commerce in Cleveland and was reputed worth over 3 million dollars having given more than 1 million to public charities. He built the Protestant Orphan Asylum in Cleveland and supported the Industrial Home and many charities, serving on the State Board of Charities.
Children of William McKinley in Barnesville found a carved land terrapin bearing the name J C Tracy 1857. Tracy, a member of the Third Ohio Regiment, died at Clarksburg West Virginia. Hamilton Tracy recalls his brother carved it and released the terrapin which later died, now kept as a memento of the fallen soldier.
The inaugural Ohio division meeting in Toledo elected officers C. T. McLain as President A. L. Flack as Vice President C. L. Flagg as Secretary and Treasurer Directors named H. A. Weeman J. H. McKinstry J. F. Piller and E. E. Ensign Visitors included National Association officers O. P. Pindell and J. L. Stone F. A. Hoyt and W. J. Hayes attended as national directors.
Dr C E Steinger, a retired country doctor, died at his home after asking his wife for morphine to ease pain. She gave him the bottle and returned to reading. Shortly after she could not rouse him, and despite aid he was pronounced dead.
Irene Johnson cashed a $130 check at Merchants and Farmers Bank in Washington Court House when a con artist pounced. The man flashed a $10 bill and demanded the cash on the counter, then slipped out with three ten-dollar bills totaling $30 ahead, leaving Johnson unaware of the loss.
