Normal College grows as Defiance area institutes boost attendance

Mr. Lowry of Florida attends the Normal College with growing enrollment and new housing. The south side work nears completion while plans include a cupola and possible incandescent lights. Misses Palmer and Grimes from Napoleon attend, chapel is led by Prof. Hootman, and the oil region boom is eyed for Defiance’s future growth. The next institute will be held at Defiance.

Harvest Heat Sets Pace for Week in Sherwood Township

Last week was hotter than harvest conditions and stock buyers crowded the area. Plowing continues for the week as Irving Hartshorn buys a large herd of sheep, described as a square dealer. Albert Hall wed Emma Swartsbeck on August 26 by Rev Stuckman in a sizable local gathering. A heavy Sunday rain aimed to close cracks in the earth, though some pastures remained risky for sheep drives.

Hancock G A R encampment to be held at Sherwod Ohio

Hancock Post G A R of Sherwood Ohio will hold a two day encampment September 9 and 10 1886 with multiple posts invited from Defiance Hicksville Cecil and others. The event includes tenting cooking drills and military routines and on the second night an attack on the fort. Music amusements and army rations are promised for all veterans and families.
