A Sunday evening blaze in Emerald destroyed the Peter Shore store and its papers, along with Shore’s house and Mrs. Zinsmith’s residence. The stock and building were insured for 1800 dollars. A nearby well incident saw a 1 year old saved by a 7 year old sister, aided by the mother after the child was pulled from the water. Mrs Harmening plans to move to the farm for the summer.
The Democrat lists county and city certificates under the Scott liquor tax law. City of Defiance totals seven thousand dollars with numerous individuals and firms named. County towns contribute two thousand dollars, bringing the county total to nine thousand dollars.

A week ago George Stryker caught a singular curiosity at the dam a fishy creature about twenty inches long with ten long tentacles each covered with suckers and a beak like a parrot it resembles a cuttlefish but lacks a hard body and tail shaped like an arrowhead it died after a week in water before reaching town for study by Dr E N Lewis observers say it is a stranger to these waters and rare and valuable even though damaged by the catch
