Nellie and Will Stop Maddened Colt and Defy Feud
Nellie rides in a wagon when a mad horse and oxen block her path at a ford. Will Jackson leaps after her, blinds the colt with his hat, and saves her life. Mr. Carter, Hannah Carnegie, and the feuding families eye the romance, soften, and consent to marriage with a disputed half acre gifted to Nellie.

The Turkish View on Polygamy in East and West
In this excerpt from Constantinople by Edmondo de Amicis, the narrator discusses attitudes toward polygamy among Eastern women and Turkish men. It contrasts the injustice felt by wives under polygamy with the domestic appeal of European family life and notes a decline in polygamy despite lingering cultural tolerance.
