Henderson Kentucky special reports Colvin Simpson a six foot mulatto from Union County murdered Mrs Graves near White Ridge on Corydon road. He woke the family demanding food and after a struggle killed the 65 year old woman and beat her brains out before fleeing. Local mob then lynched Simpson.
Hon. Joseph Rankin of Wisconsin died in his lodgings on M Street Washington Sunday after a brief decline. He was surrounded by family and friends as he faded, urged farewell to his two children Jennie and Joe, and died with a physician by his side. Rankin, born 1833 in Passaic New Jersey, served in the Wisconsin Legislature and as a Captain in the Twenty-seventh Wisconsin Volunteers before joining Congress in 1882. His Congressional escort included senators and representatives from several states. His remains were sent to Manitowoc Wisconsin for burial.
A Jackson Michigan fire at the county poor-house five miles from the city claimed five inmate lives. Keeper Charles Smith saved others but two men and three women perished in the blaze amid freezing night air.
