Notable banker B L Abell of Defiance dies at 39

Benjamin L Abell, 39, longtime cashier at The Merchant's National Bank of Defiance, dies at his Defiance home. A Democrat leader and civic driver, he helped found the Defiance Female Seminary, served on the city council, and aided the Cotton Exposition commission. He leaves a widow and three children. The Defiance County Agricultural Society met January 15 1886 with officers elected and plans to address premiums and debt.

Bank Pays Tribute to Late Cashier Benjamin Abell

At a special board meeting of Merchants' National Bank the directors express deep regret over the sudden death of cashier Benjamin L. Abell. They note his competent faithful service since the bank's organization and say his loss is irreparable. The secretary is instructed to drape the bank in mourning and close for the funeral. They extend sympathy to his widow and will furnish her a copy of the resolutions.

Natural gas prospects rise as Freemont well explodes to flow

North Baltimore and Van Wert seek gas as drilling toward China-ward progress slows in the local well. at Freemont gas well No. 3, a nitro-glycerine torpedo at 1,250 feet released a 30 foot flame and a surface roaring gas surge. The well is estimated to yield 200,000 cubic feet daily, with potential increases after completion.

The dedication of the Presbyte rian church at Holfare is set for next Sunday. The Madison Presbyterian church where Rev Slagle assisted in dedication was not completed due to unprovided indebtedness. Rev J H Muhlenbeck of St Michaels Catholic Church Adams broke suffered a severe loss from the parsonage fire destroying part of his library and most furniture.

City Council Holds Condolence Meeting for Mr Abell

A called meeting of the City Council in memory of late member Mr Abell was held with all members present except Jno Schneider. The chair announced the death and the council set up a three member committee to draft condolence resolutions and publish them in Express and Democrat.

Contractor Rowles Recalled From Ada Over Unfinished Sewer

J R Rowles who left the Harrison street sewer project was found in Ada after claims that his backers George Spangler and John Black forged names. Black is Rowles father in law. Bondsmen denied signing bonds. Rumor says the city may drop prosecution if Rowles completes the work and settles debts.

Land transfers and town lot sales in Defiance area

A long list of real estate transfers shows many quit claims and sales in Defiance, Hicksville, Milford and Highland townships including 173 acres for $1000 and 80 acres for $1600. Other entries include a 40 acre quit claim in Hicksville and a 30 acre lot in Edgerton addition. Public notices mention marriage licenses and business ads.
