Sherman the Stronger Candidate for Ohio in 1888
Defiance Ohio April 21 1887 editorial argues for Senator Sherman of Ohio over Blaine as the Republican standard bearer in 1888. It asserts Sherman would win independent Republican votes and appeal to businessmen, while noting Blaine’s past losses and potential Mugwump/Stalwart backlash. It also praises the alien land act and urges enforcement of Sunday laws to regulate baseball.
