The Deer Park Fall Festival drew about 30 000 attendees over three days with Joe Fields of the Chamber of Commerce calling it the most successful yet. Prizes ranged from gift certificates to a photo album and a variety of items from local sponsors and businesses.
This week’s Progress features the Outdoorsman fall edition with hunting tips and how-to guides for outdoor sports. It highlights bargains on winter equipment and where to buy gear.
Deer Park voters prepare for a general election with ballots at Carpenter Elementary School, the Community Center, and the Civic Center. The slate includes presidential contenders Carter Mondale Ford Dole Anderson Shackelford Camejo Reid McCarthy and U S Senate hopefuls Bentsen Steelman Gallion plus Socialist candidates as listed.
Baker Elementary hosts its first annual Halloween Carnival October 30 from 6 to 10 p.m. at the Spencer Highway Underwood Road lot with PTO support. Parks and Recreation adds five classes starting November 15 with craft and knitting options priced 7.50 for six weeks and 5.00 for crochet and knitting. The Deer Park Ladies' Civic Club hosts a salad supper at 6 30 p m on Thursday Oct 28 at 906 Luella to honor volunteers for the recent phone book delivery. Season tickets for varsity boys and girls basketball go on sale Tuesday in the school administration athletic office through Nov 12 from 8 am to 4 pm. Sub varsity and at door prices are listed with adults and students differing by game type and number.
Assistant Postmaster Raymond Bailey has been cleared of charges after an investigation found no evidence Bailey requested the postal employee to perform improper work. The complainant and Bailey will remain employed at the Deer Park Post Office.
Seven men were injured at the Shell Manufacturing Complex when the cap blew off an unused pipeline during welding and caused a flash fire. Two workers were seriously hurt. Shell spokesman Bill Lafield said the exact cause of the fire is not known.
The council denied bids for the Deer Park Terrace sanitary sewer project due to a large price gap between bids. Hassell Construction Co Inc of Pasadena could not bond for the low bid. The panel approved Marathon Pipeline amid new ordinance limits on pipelines.
Texas Governor Dolph Briscoe will be honored at a reception in Deer Park at 3 30 p m on Thursday in October with local officials and residents expected to attend.
