The Deer Park Art League will stage an exhibit Friday and Saturday November 12 and 13 from noon to 9 p.m. in the Community Center auditorium. Pictures will be for sale and the public is invited. The center at 610 S San Augustine hosts the event.
Parents of deaf children plan an organizational meeting at 1 p.m. Tuesday Nov 9 in the BSU Building Baytown. City Council meets 7 30 p.m. Tuesday Nov 9 at City Hall. Parks offers six week classes starting Nov 15 with registration week of Nov 8 at the Community Center. Paul Driscoll the 1975 World Teenage Champion Magician performs Nov 5 at 11 a.m. at 10 E San Augustine open free. Deer Park police report 12 arrests Oct 27 to Nov 2 including public intoxication and auto theft. Deer Park schools cancel classes Nov 5 with in service for staff. students resume Nov 8.
In Deer Park a 70 percent turnout accompanied a close national race. Presidential candidate Jimmy Carter led with 50.4 percent, 3423 votes to Ford’s 3330 in three precincts. Bentsen won the Senate race with 57 percent. gearhart and others trailed in local contests. Amendments were defeated. Precinct results show Carter 53 percent and Bentsen 58 percent in Precinct 51. Precinct 84 turnout was 69 percent with Carter 54 percent and Bentsen 62 percent.
Vandals damaged mercury lamp lighting at a Halloween carnival tent loaned by Gene Pack of Lights Inc. The leaking gas is toxic, and Pack urged checking for possible poisoning. Parks official Doug Burgess said damages include lamps, lumber, tar paper, and a hay pile that may have been used to start a fire.
The project uses an 86000 grant from the Department of Housing and Urban Development via Harris County to demolish 22 condemned homes in Spencerview Deer Park. After land title steps, city council will approve bids. cost estimated at 1500 per house. Remaining funds fund sidewalks on Center Street and San Augustine avenues near Heritage Elementary and the high school south campus.
Deer Park Progress offers a 25 dollar prize for best entry in the annual cookbook and recipe contest. Local residents may submit main dish salad or dessert entries by November 12, with the cookbook published November 18 for holiday cooking. Diamond Shamrock received Texas Air Control Board approval last Wednesday to start the $100 million Independence Plant at San Jacinto Complex, a vinyl chloride producer with 1 billion pounds yearly capacity. Construction by Brown and Root will begin immediately, aiming for mechanical completion in early 1978. Dr. David Marrack urged delay citing cancer and birth defect links. the board unanimously granted the permit despite the appeal.
The annual Halloween carnival was a success with more than 5000 young people attending. Coordinator Jean Fonteno praised teamwork and noted the tented venue allowed crowds to move freely. Children enjoyed a costume contest jack o lantern contest and games at booths. Fonteno aims to grow the event each year.
A new sign on Loop 610 near the Gulf Freeway directs drivers to Deer Park and the San Jacinto Monument. The Deer Park Chamber of Commerce pressed for the signage for over three years amid construction contracts and highway department plans. Additional Deer Park exit signs will be installed on the Gulf Freeway within about a year.
