Tax Cut Lowers Telephone Bills for Southwestern Bell
Federal excise tax on telephone service drops from seven to six percent beginning January 1. In the Pasadena Houston area customers save an estimated 4.3 million on 1976 bills, with statewide savings of 12.5 million. The tax will fall one percent annually until it expires January 1, 1982. Southwestern Bell says earnings are unaffected as it only collects the tax for the government.

Trustees Approve Ball Park Seat Move and Vacations
Trustees granted a 12 month vacation extension for district employees and approved relocating over 1 000 seats from the old football stadium to the baseball field to relieve crowding. The move costs 7500 dollars and 12800 dollars for 700 new seats. An enrollment total reached 7 963 with 10 more students joining. A site survey was ordered for a quarter mile track at Deepwater Junior. Concession sales at 1975 football games totaled 9267.95 with 35 percent to the schools.

The Deer Park High School Student Council entry won Best in Parade at the Jaycees Christmas parade. Their float featured a sleigh with Santa and urged viewers to vote in the school bond election. Cub Scout Pack 865 won Best Float with a snow man scene. The Light Foot Brigade was named Best Marching Group. A Kiwanis Club silver-covered float won Best Theme. San Jacinto Ravens Women’s Team Built From Deer Park Alumni
San Jacinto College’s first year women’s basketball team, the Ravens, is largely composed of Deer Park High School exes under coach Buffy Powell. Ten scholarships were offered for 75 76 with three still pending. The squad, mostly freshmen, posted a 4 1 record in five pre season scrimmages and five games, including a close game against Lamar University. Powell highlights local recruitment and strong high school fundamentals as key factors in the team’s early success.
