LPISD buys the Atkinson Estate for 39000 including closing costs to relieve overcrowding at College Park Elementary. Officials forecast a three to five year need due to rapid area home construction. The property has sewers water and paved streets funded by the 1974 bond proposal. The district also builds a gym and pool beside the administration building for high school students.
Diamond Shamrock Corp approves a 1 million pound per year vinyl chloride monomer plant adjacent to its Deer Park facilities. The $100 million project, to be built on Battleground Road, will create about 160 permanent Houston area jobs and 1,000 construction posts. CE Lummus will handle much engineering and procurement work.
The Deer Park Ladies Civic Club awarded four first places and 11 honorable mentions in the Christmas decorations contest. Awards went to Carlos Miller for best religious theme, William Crawford for best use of lights, J. E. Cobb for best contemporary design, and Dr. Bruce Parker for best Christmas theme. Multiple honorable mentions listed with addresses, and no commercial category award was given.
The Deer Park Post Office will close at 1 p.m. on Christmas Eve and stay closed for Christmas Day. Regular hours resume 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. on December 26.
Gary Dillard Shell names RG Dillard as general manager in the manufacturing organization effective Jan 1 1976. He will stay at the Deer Park Manufacturing Complex where he has led since June 1974. Dillard a Clarendon native, UC Berkeley graduate, joined Shell in 1956 as a chemist and held multiple posts including Geismar plant manager and Shell Chemical staff admin manager.
A scholastic census will be conducted for the Deer Park School District from Dec 26 to Feb 1. Census takers will call on every residence to gather data on children now in school and on pre school children for enrollment projections. Identification available on request.
Progressions Memorial funds for Deer Park Police Officer Dave Kendall have been set up at Al lied Deer Park Bank and San Jacinto State Bank to aid hospital costs. Kendall died Dec. 18. Dechert, 4213 Destin, was initiated into Alpha Lambda Delta at the University of Texas. An Alpha Lambda Delta member must have a 3.5 GPA after the first semester or year. BOARD There will be a called meet at 4:38 p.m. Dec. 38 at the Administration Building.
Arch ie Burkhalter was acquitted Sunday in a state district court after a 10 man jury found him not guilty of plotting to kill business partner Robert Pendleton to gain control of Red Bluff Memorial Hospital. The case had long and disputed history with prior convictions overturned and a mistrial.
The city postpones garbage collection over holidays according to the Public Works Department.
