Wool scarcity and higher material costs were cited as factors, while wholesale cloth costs and retail prices largely held firm.
J H Johnstone of the Chicago Live Stock World predicts Iowa will soon be independent of imported horses and may sell surplus to other regions. He cites the large display of Percheron mares and foals at the state fair and notes war disruptions have cut European supply.
Palm and Fire side cites a government summary of 1915 counts showing national ratios of people to horses and horses to mules. Texas leads in cattle at 5,121,000 and mules at 75,000. Iowa tops swine with 8,720,000, while Montana and Wyoming hold the largest sheep totals around 440,000 each. Rhode Island reports 29,000 milch cows and Nevada 24,000. Wisconsin has 1,026,000 cattle.
Chairman C. A. Rawson of the Republican state central committee organizes a committee of one hundred to back Senator Cummins in a presidential bid. The Des Moines meeting launched the effort with assurances of strong middle west and eastern support.
A new holding enforces poll tax payment for all residents in Mason City to receive beer shipments. Foreigners and Americans alike must show poll tax receipts or face withheld beer. The campaign slogans emphasize paying the tax to enjoy beef and government participation.
In Texas near Brownsville two kidnapped men Earl Donaldson of Fayette Iowa and a named engineer with concrete construction work were found dead in a dry lake bed about twelve miles north of Brownsville. The remains were discovered after their kidnapping.
Germany accepts US demands in the submarine dispute. Ambassador Von Bernstorff assures Secretary Lansing that passenger ships will not be sunk without warning or safety measures for noncombatants, provided liners do not resist or escape. Washington officials note the move as a recognition of Wilson's principles and indicate relief at the resolution.
Des Moines to host a mutual protective group led by Sheriff John F. Griffin to curb automobile theft across the state. About 150 000 owners expected to join. annual dues one dollar. Members notify local officials who relay theft reports to Griffin in Des Moines. Winneshiek County officials already taking up the plan.
In a special election Webster City residents approved the city manager plan by a two to one vote. The measure follows a law passed by the recent Iowa legislature and may lead other Iowa cities to adopt the plan.
Spirit Lake senator L. E. B. Praneis was elected chairman of the legislative committee on retrenchment and reform at the state house meeting. He succeeds Senator J. H. Allen of Poca hontas.
