Washington November 11 Bakers nationwide face standardized bread rules to begin December 10 with one, one and a half, two, or four pound loaves and a maximum ounce variation. Limits on sugar and shortening per barrel of flour, switch to vegetable oil substitutes, skimmed milk only, and rolls made from same dough as bread. No returned loaves accepted to curb losses.
The second Liberty loan raised 4.617 billion dollars, 4 percent above the 3 billion goal, with nine million four hundred subscribers. Every federal reserve district exceeded its quota, and half of the sum above the target will be accepted, yielding 3.9087 billion in bonds. Chicago district subscriptions totaled 55.853 million, 39 percent over its quota.
The federal government compelled a Cedar Rapids wholesale grocer to sell nearly a carload of two pound cans of corn at 85 cents a dozen. The corn had sat in storage almost three years awaiting higher prices. Agents audited the firm and allowed a ten percent profit on the holdings, a likely Iowa first in government compelled food sales at reasonable prices.
Camp Dodge in Iowa moves toward permanent organization under Major General E H Plummer as Major M A Butler begins transferring command. The camp is technically ready for 25 000 troops but clothing shortages delay full concentration possibly until December 1. Overcoats and uniforms expected by then. Remaining increments and 3 000 Alabama Negroes slated for mobilization if called. Construction cost slightly over 5.5 million dollars. Four 3 inch field guns arrived. artillery practice likely to start next week.
All import avenues for distilled liquors for beverage use were closed last Wednesday based on the Attorney General’s view of prohibition laws. Liquor made before Oct 5 cannot be imported for any purpose, while post Oct 3 production for non-beverage uses may enter under forthcoming rules. Virgin Islands liquor made after Oct 3 from local materials may be brought in for beverage or other uses.
J F Deems federal food administrator for Iowa plans to license all state retailers to fix prices and ensure fair profits. Wholesale price controls exist but retailer overcharging prompts action. National notices already curb sugar sales to violators.
A special three color flag will fly over Hawk eye regiments on foreign battlefields alongside the American banners. The first regimental flag, designed by the state Daughters of the American Revolution, was sent to the Rain bow division troops from the town the 18th previously the Third Iowa infantry. The flag features blue white and red vertical bars with a wide white center backdrop for part of the state seal and an eagle holding four streamers that read Our Liberties and Our Rights We Will Maintain. The word Town appears in red and gold.
The food administration announced a bountiful supply of Thanksgiving turkeys at reasonable prices. Cold storage stocks are large and the food control act will curb hoarding. With more product entering the market, consumers may soon see abundant supply at fair prices.
Washington orders instructed commissary officers to advertise for bids to supply the 88th division at Camp Dodge with one million pounds of potatoes and 300000 pounds of onions each month for soldiers.
