George Cleveland Manley among forty eight seamen who with officers rescued fifty four of the crew of the Florence H. after the ship caught fire and broke in two in French waters on April 17. Rear Admiral Wilson commended the rescue in his official report.
The Iowa Council of National Defense protests against the Nonpartisan League urging withdrawal from Iowa during the war. A committee was sent to St. Paul to deliver the request. Minnesota leaders of the League face convictions for disloyal utterances and related charges.
James S Clarkson longtime Republican National Committee member and New York customs surveyor died at his brother H R Clarkson's home in Newark. He earlier worked at The Des Moines Register starting 1866 rising to foreman and editor before The Register title passed to Clarkson family. He ran for Congress in 1866 but lost to General G M Dodge. He authored two popular fiction books under pen names.

Senator James Hamilton Lewis told Evanston officials in Chicago that the United States has one million soldiers abroad and will match England by December 1. He cited explosive production, ordnance spending, rifle and ammunition outputs, and a growing navy with 150 warships in European waters and 400 000 sailors, with naval strength rising to half a million by October 1.
War stamp officials in Des Moines aim to have agricultural fair associations grant premiums in war stamps rather than money. About twenty county fairs including Winneshiek join, offering smaller premiums for country produce in stamps to meet county and state quotas.
A reader questions the value of electing a railroad commissioner arguing the U S government runs railroads with full jurisdiction and a state commission has no power to affect roads. They claim the commission only draws a salary and does nothing.

Des Moines Iowa June 1 three thousand Iowans in class one of the selective draft report to Camp Dodge in the five day period beginning June 24 quotas of the various local boards based on class one men will be announced after new call orders from Washington. The call will add about 280 to 300 thousand to the national army. Credits for voluntary enlistments and the class one basis will delay quotas by two or three days before board tallies. This is the first of the third draft calls to tidy up the first draft allotments.
