The War Department announced replacement camps for June and July draftees, with infantry to Camp Gordon, Camp Lee, Camp Pike and field artillery to Camp Jackson, Camp Taylor, Camp Doniphan, Camp McClellan. Camp Dodge may host replacements but no new divisions are planned.
Paris June 6 reports the high morale of American soldiers wounded at Cantigny with about 90 percent expected to recover. Privates in a Paris hospital share grim humor asking when they can return to the front after German action. One notes three over the top runs as sport while another vows to go back only if he recovers, even as leg injuries end a trench warrior’s combat future.
Mr. Hoover the United States Food Administrator questions the public urging which to feed first in wartime rationing. He notes both consume substantial food and implies a moral test of sacrifice for citizens.
The Adj. Gen. reports Iowa districts will not send any men from Decatur, Monroe and Ringgold under the June 24 call for Camp Dodge. In the six counties listed, Allamakee 31, Chickasaw 35, Clayton 27, Fayette 8, Howard 10, Winneshiek 17, with named locals among Winneshiek's recruits. Net class 1 quota statewide stands at 24,064.
The department projects total wheat output at 931 million bushels for the year with winter wheat at 587 million and spring wheat at 344 million. Oats, barley, rye, and hay production are also forecast along with acreage and condition percentages for each crop. Previous year comparisons and May forecasts are noted, with conditions near ideal during spring.
General Pershing reports the Rain Bow division losses across many Iowa towns including Dubuque Mason City Cedar Rapids Des Moines and Council Bluffs. Five from Dubuque and three from Mason City died in action with others wounded in Cantigny. Sergeant Donald Bechter of Independence died in an accident. The deaths will deepen Iowa sorrow yet strengthen resolve for victory.
The state highway commission recorded 224 accidents statewide in April with 253 injured and 20 fatalities. No fatalities occurred in this county. The note also mentions that the United States produces 820 million dollars worth of buttons annually.
The Daily Express military correspondent notes a rapid Atlantic troop flow and high quality officers and men. He says German doom is evident in American spirit at Veuilly and that the reserve’s fighting qualities overshadow minor gains and losses.

Decorah mourns Anton Bernatz the first Winneshiek county youth to enlist in 1917 and die in France. He left Chicago for service after two weeks with Commonwealth Edison, served in a machine gun unit, and died of wounds on France’s western front. President Wilson and Debtor Corah cited as unable to finish the war alone. The only path to victory lies in a strong united people supporting the government in Washington. If citizens furnish means freely and promptly, victory is ours. otherwise the responsibility rests on every American. Do not be a slacker in any duty.
