Washington May 23 A sweeping change to selective service orders all draft age men to work or fight after July 1. The rules target non use ful occupations including gamblers attendants hotel staff waiters and clerks with exceptions for theater performers and certain dependents. Local boards may reclassify men to class one for refusal to take useful employment and consider domestic hardship or gender based employment issues.
During June 17 to 26 all alien enemy women aged 14 and over must register with the postmaster. Registrants supply family, age, relationships, residence, and occupation details, and may not change residence without registrar approval. Fingerprints will be taken with courteous treatment to avoid implying guilt.
Petitions circulated in Waterloo last week seek a government investigation into food prices notably for wheat flour substitutes. Allegations at a mass meeting claim prices are excessive and widespread discontent grows among workers.
Des Moines May 25 Governor W L Harding issues a wartime proclamation declaring English the sole medium of instruction in all Iowa schools and urging that public conversation and religious worship be conducted in English Where misunderstandings arise officials should mediate rather than form independent groups The order follows counsel with the state council of national defense and aims to foster unity during the war.
Havner plans a second letter to county officials to enforce the road patrol law. Reports from Webster County Engineer J. O.
