Farm and Fireside profile of Wis. small-farm success
F. P. Showers of Walworth County, Wisconsin, turned a 40 acre long-tilled tract into a profitable dairy and alfalfa operation. He nets about 72 dollars per cow and roughly 98 dollars per acre from alfalfa after costs, attributes success to diligent soil prep, proper seed beds, inoculation, lime use, and careful herd management. His wife helped name the home The Manx, and they modernized the farmhouse with running water, furnace, and other conveniences to reflect a life of productive farming and shared effort.

Care in Making Cannon
A nickel alloy field gun is forged to about 90000 psi tensile strength with rigid inspections. Any flaw leads to rejection or proof firing at excess pressure, as 25 percent rejections are common for inexperienced makers. The gun must endure up to 35000 psi interior pressure and stresses near 70 percent of elastic limit. A failure risks deaths and moral impact on detachments.
