A lengthy 1910s style column offers patriotic verse and political commentary. It rails at German aggression, praises the US war effort and preparedness, critiques Congress and tariffs, and notes social changes while lampooning Kaiserism and Bolshevism.
Washington plans a large war exhibit shipped to Sedalia Missouri for the state fair then on to Des Moines Iowa before August 21. The display features army and navy weapons gear and an interior mine rescue car from the interior department with a five man crew. Also shown are agricultural and commerce department displays including fisheries leather goods moving pictures and other war related educational exhibits.
The United States assumed control of all telephone and telegraph lines on the first of the month. Telegraph operators are now government employees under Washington direction. Telegram recipients are notified by phone and must retrieve messages or send a proxy. those without phones will have the government deliver the telegram with a ten cent delivery fee.
Peter Fasting, a Story City youth, inherited 8000 kroner from Norway and converted 1000 into War Savings Stamps. He shared half with his sister in Norway. The piece appraises universal military training as necessary, noting a clash between 18 year olds’ enlistment and maturity, and references Theodore Roosevelt's prior warning.
The state treasurer will soon distribute 800000 from automobile license funds to counties for road work. A 90 percent share goes to counties after 5 percent each for highway maintenance and department costs, with 499000 federal aid set aside for post roads. State pharmacy board approves temporary permits for drug stores whose licensed pharmacists are in army or navy service. Stores may sell proprietary medicines and certain drugs but cannot fill prescriptions or handle prohibited substances. Permits must be displayed and managers follow board rules. revocation for violations. Operates only during the war.
St Louis August 1 The inspector Charles McNally of the street and sewer department predicts the decisive battle will occur September 9 and the allies will advance with little resistance after that. He bases his forecast on a dream from a month ago and mentions a horse race win tied to the dream.
Washington officials state no orders limit gasoline or oil sales for cars. The war industries board and the fuel administration issued a joint statement denying Sunday and holiday sale bans by local automobile dealers associations without governmental authority.
The Iowa Food Administration led by J F Deems announces a nationwide drive against sugar hoarders beginning August 11. Field agents will seize illegally stored sugar, revoke Red Cross penalties, and press cases to federal courts. Hoarders face up to a 5000 dollar fine or two years incarceration.
In Marshalltown a theater first used a girls' orchestra to replace a men’s ensemble in line with government orders to employ women where possible. Five local musicians perform with Miss Alfreda Busch directing and first violin. Members include Mrs Myrtle Bergen cornetist Miss Corinne Hoffman pianist Miss How Cole second violin and Miss Sarah Wardman cellist.
Federal inspectors will audit all canning machinery in Towa and later check sanitation and working conditions. Workers must take the US oath. visitors require written superintendent approval. Canners aim for top quality as Uncle Sam takes 25 percent of the corn pack. Waterloo Canning Co. projects 18 million cans for government, weighing 11250 pounds from Iowa to feed troops. Weather is ideal. season opens two weeks early, crop largest yet.
Allied forces at the apex of the push advance as Rainbow division and the 149th artillery engage near Fere-en-Tardenois Sergy and Cierges. Gen March notes enemy aims shift to annihilation, with Pershing to report casualties and plans for six new U S divisions to be raised at several camps.
Following out the same policy, we have ordered the transfer from the cavalry to the field artillery arm of the service of fifteen National Army cavalry regiments, numbered from 901 to 315. These men have been in the United States for some time and have had a good deal of training and are now going to be utilized for service abroad. These regiments will form part of the field artillery for the new divisions now being organized.
The Iowa War Savings committees will aggressively limit cashing of War Savings Stamps. The county chairman was informed of state plans to track and investigate stamp cashing, with post office lists used to identify individuals who cash stamps, except when financial reverses or illness are evident.
