Voluntary enlistment in the army and navy were suspended to prevent disruption of industries pending the disposition of a bill to extend ages for all men between 18 and 43. Orders were issued by Secretary Baker and Secretary Daniels recommending no voluntary enlistments after today until further notice. Some bank balances grow rapidly but are easily checked.
The Federal Trade Commission urged President Wilson to grant the railroad administration a monopoly on meat transportation and distribution. The plan would transfer stockyards branch houses refrigerated cars and icing plants from packers to the rail system, leaving packers only slaughtering and skinning. The report argues this would curb packer influence across related industries and protect producers competitors and consumers from a single dominant control.
