Fuel administration orders all retail coal dealers to obtain a federal license at no cost. Violating fuel orders from Dr Garfiel d’s department will result in license revocation and loss of business. Local and state fuel committees will enforce the license in Iowa.
The laburnum and the common lilac are not native to this country. Laburnum came from the Alpine region of Europe while lilac hails from Persia where it is called lilag. Horse chestnut originated in Asia, likely northern India, and reached Europe around the mid sixteenth century.
Washington July 24 The Treasury virtually decided to hold the Fourth Liberty loan campaign in three weeks from September 28 to October 19. The drive will be shortened from four weeks to avoid the mid campaign interest slump. Officials cite October farmer harvests and finishing before the November elections as reasons. Thousands of candidates for office are expected to enroll as Liberty loan speakers though political issues will not be discussed.
The United States government offers an exchange of 4% bonds for any bonds of the first or second Liberty loan. Decorah banks will handle exchanges upon delivery of bonds and required fees. Fees are 20 cents per holder plus 10 cents on coupon bonds, with insured bonds exempt. Exchange allows a flat-fee advantage. third Liberty loan 4% bonds cannot exceed the rate, and unexchanged bonds cannot later be swapped for higher rates. Notify your bank by August 31, 1918 to proceed.
The Knights of Columbus Cedar Rapids chapter announces a large wartime relief program for U S soldiers abroad. Forty million cigarettes with the Knights monogram, plus 10 tons of chocolate, 2 million gum packs, bouillon cubes, coffee and condensed milk, are to be distributed free to boys in the trenches as part of government wartime measures.

The English guinea derived its name from gold from Guinea and the African company. Charles II granted a charter permitting their stamp of an elephant on the coin to encourage gold coinage. Five pound pieces shared similar rim inscriptions and crown piece styling.
W Champlin Robinson, director of oil conservation, says gasoline supplies are ample for war and normal needs if conserved. Des Moines Iowa July 25 The state division of the women's committee council of national defense begins enrolling 1050 young Iowa women aged nineteen to thirty five for nurse training Recruiting stations will open in every county with Mrs E F Whitley of Webster City as state chairman and Mrs W C Finkbine of Des Moines as assistant. Two classes of registrants will be accepted with preferred applicants to be assigned first. Seventy Iowa hospitals are recognized as training schools and nationwide 25000 women are sought for the nurse reserve through April 1 1919.
An order received by the local draft board last Thursday restricts releases for selective service until further notice. All registrants must await their order number before induction, affecting 1917 class releases and the 1918 class. Marine and navy recruiting will rely on those outside draft ages, while Adjutant General Guy E. Logan, now in the national army, thanks Iowa boards for cooperation.
Central Division totals show 3,941,195 members across Illinois Michigan Wisconsin Iowa and Nebraska, about 25.5 percent of regional population. Iowa tops the division with 1,087,511 members and 42 percent of its population enrolled, while Nebraska follows with 525,740 members. The division reports 580 chapters distributed among Illinois Michigan Wisconsin Iowa and Nebraska.
