Democratic leaders plan to drop minimum wage, congressional redistricting and unemployment compensation bills to push for a late September adjournment. The action appears to have tacit White House support as these three measures are shelved for 1965, with action resumed in 1966.
The Decatur Boys' Club will close from Saturday through Monday for fall break. Officials say activities resume Tuesday with normal hours.
Hurricane Betsy moved toward the southeastern Bahamas with growing strength before veering northwest. Winds reached up to 115 mph as officials predicted Betsy would stay a small hurricane and lessen threat to Florida’s populated southeast.

A southbound L and N freight train struck a 1955 Chevrolet driven by Richard McCulloch 19 of Moulton at Cedar Lake Road crossing in southwest Decatur. He was critically injured dragged about a half mile. Macy McCulloch not thrown from the vehicle. See TRAIN on Page 2.
Indian defense officials said a Pakistani assault led by tanks pushed about five miles into Indian southwest Kashmir as fighting continued for a second day. Defense Minister Y B Chavan briefed Parliament on the escalation and the military response.
Natchez officials reject Black demands after a two hour meeting with representatives of a Black rights group amid a threatened civil unrest call. Gov. Johnson orders 650 Mississippi Guardsmen into Natchez as soldiers march through the downtown carrying gas masks and bayonets.
Four Gateway Shopping Center stores were entered last night with an undetermined amount of money taken. Police said this afternoon that investigation continues. See SHOP on Page 2.
In Gabon Dr. Albert Schweitzer aged 90 lies gravely ill in his jungle hospital where he has treated thousands of Africans. In Washington the Pentagon reports deserions in South Viet Nam's armed forces have fallen by more than half from an early-year high.
Air Force B52 bombers attacked a suspected Viet Cong area in Dinh Duong Province, rattling windows in downtown Saigon. The raid was the 17th B52 attack of the Vietnam War, with Guam-based crews increasing activity amid secur ity restrictions and signals of further strikes.
A federal grant of 129075 dollars funds a joint Neighborhood Youth Corps project for Cullman city and county schools. Sen. Sparkman announced the approval in Washington. Charles McNutt says 16 to 21 year olds will work up to 15 hours weekly, earning 1.25 dollars per hour, with two thirds of the cost covered by the grant.
New York stocks show higher activity with broader trading. Chicago notes include corn mixed, oats firm, soybeans weak, hogs down 25 to 50 cents, top $23.60, and slaughter steers steady with top $26.75.
