Alabama's prison system will be discussed May 31 at a capstone conference in Montgomery between Governor James E. Folsom Senate President J. C. Inzer and House Speaker W. M. Beck. A Jerusalem report from the American French Belgian consular truce commission says only a United Nations force can stop fighting. The council discussed the gravity of the Jerusalem crisis and urged neutral forces and military observers, while Egypt objected to force. Commerce Secretary Sawyer rejected a request to force John C. Virden head of the Office of Industry Cooperation to resign. Virden's 22 year old daughter works for Tass and is linked to a communist group in opposition to her father. Virden has offered his resignation and Sawyer says he may remain if he wishes.
The University of Alabama Bureau of Business Research reports April debit totals at Decatur banks rose when averaged per day, up 5.9 percent from March. April's $15,156,905 debits exceed April 1947 by 23 percent, with saving deposits at $2,285,742 up from March and year ago. Building permits value at $185,100 marks the highest since March 1946, up greatly from March 1948 and April 1947.
James A. Farley says the South will stay with the Democratic Party and predicts Truman will be renominated before the first roll call at the Democratic National Convention. He warns against potential Southern defections and notes Eisenhower as a possible but unlikely nominee, forecasting about 5 million votes with 75 percent from Democrats.
Four Montgomery men Mike Crain Tom Adams Ewell Gregg and Maynard Layman oversee bid opening for the North Alabama Livestock Coliseum to be built in Decatur. Bids open at four this afternoon with $60 000 for palitins on Courtland Road near the State Highway Department offices. The Decatur group also seeks supervision for the Decatur curb market under a yet to be formed state board.

A general alarm fire in Florence Alabama destroyed part of an A and P super-store causing about 50000 dollars in damage to the two story brick building and stock. Fire Chief Donald C White said firefighters arrived after 515 A M and battled smoke and flames for about ten minutes before entering the store roof area to reach hidden fire.
In Daphne Alabama the Baldwin county town cannot pay its bills due to resignations and a Mobile circuit court order leaving only two of five council members. The judge ruled Councilman J M Broadus held office illegally for lacking majority appointment. Governor Folsom may appoint new council members to restore quorum and discharge debts.
Senators Hill and Sparkman of Alabama said they will urge a senate appropriations subcommittee to approve 4 million dollars to start a steam generating plant by the Tennessee Valley Authority. The project aims to supplement TVA hydro electric power at New Johnsonville Tennessee.

The National Labor Relations Board ruled it cannot hold union shop elections in 13 states with bans or regulations. The administrative order cites Taft Hartley, which bans the closed shop but allows a union shop if a majority of workers vote for it.
Two fifth grade boys Jimmy and Robert Ronald Peterson took a two place Ercoupe, built a long flight nearly 120 miles toward Texas. They learned from comic books and landed safely, claiming the plane was easy to operate.
A Montgomery county grand jury found evidence of gross inefficiency in the state Highway Department and urged removal of incompetent officials. It cited irregular transactions with four contractors including Calhoun Asphalt and Mac Saxon Construction and called for legal action to recover funds. The panel asked for more time to investigate absentee voting and urged abolition of absentee ballots.
Beverly Hills police booked radio comedian Phil Baker 55 on a misdemeanor drunken driving charge after patrolmen saw his car weave on a side street. He was jailed briefly and released on 250 bail to appear Tuesday before Beverly Police Court judge Charles Griffin. Baker, longtime emcee of Take It or Leave It, recently began a new network show with limited participation.
