Morgan men pass tests for Florence navy office recruits

Morgan county sends 13 more boys to the Florence recruiting office for a navy examination. All passed the physical tests for forestry work and will receive two weeks training at Fort McClellan before camp life. The county’s weekly quota is 35 and living conditions include pay, clothing, food, shelter, medical care, and vocational training.

Community singing at the Church of God on Sixth avenue south drew a large turnout. Many county singers participated and the Wallace quartet of Decatur delivered several pleasing numbers.

Milk Strike Ends With Agreement in Wisconsin

The six day Milk pools strike ended with an agreement after one death and deployment of half the state militia. Guardsmen will patrol trouble zones while troops plan withdrawal. A farmer controlled committee will study agriculture issues, following a conference in the governor’s office.

Youth Receives 20 Year Sentence in NYC Stabbing Case

Harry Murch, a Queens schoolboy, was sentenced to 20 years in Sing Sing for the stabbing death of 12 year old William Bender. Testimony by 10 year old John Miller described Murch tying and stabbing Bender after the boy allegedly told of Murch striking an old woman with a wrench. Defense argued over Murch’s age with claims of 14 or 16. Attorneys filed a notice of appeal.

Morgan county berries shipped to Northern and Eastern markets arrive in better condition after rain cessation. F. O. Keller notes all crates sold this week at 1.50 dollars F. O. B. and expects prices to hold with fair weather. Twenty three cars shipped this season. two more from Hartselle and one from Decatur will push total to 26. Aroma berries show deep red color and rich flavor.

Program for Central and Riverside graduates commence sermon

The service program for the Central and Riverside graduating classes to be held Sunday at 11 o clock in Riverside auditorium was announced. It lists Prelude by Miss Harriett Irwin, congregational singing, prayer, scripture, anthem by the choir, offertory, sermon by Rev. J. E. Berkstress, another congregational song, benediction and postlude.

Decatur Alabama city council, after a local election, denied a petition to permit Sunday moving pictures. The measure failed 736 to 519 following a May 16 vote, election costs discussed, council formalizes denial in a May 18, 1933 resolution.

J A Hall Dies At His Home Here

J A Hall aged 54 died yesterday afternoon at three at his home 911 Wadsworth street. Funeral services will be at the residence Saturday morning at eight, with burial at Trussville. Rev J H Hill and priest will conduct. Survived by two sons W M Hall of Arlington Texas and J D Hall of Montgomery, a daughter Mrs J G Self of Decatur, and three grandchildren.

Mattress Fire Near Walnut Street Alarms Firefighters

At 4 00 this morning firemen rushed to the 200 block Walnut Street after a mattress in an alley ignited. No damage was reported.

County Councils Formed to Aid July 18 Education Vote

Auburn Alabama May 10 A citizen council campaign is urged to inform voters about issues in the July 18 education referendum. The Alabama Congress of Parents and Teachers backs county councils to unite agencies for public school support, with ten regional chairs and an Auburn home headquarters.

Hearing For Hule Saturday Morning

Grady Hale charged with burgling the Gulf Refining Company plant offices on March 19 will have a hearing at 10 o’clock Saturday morning before Judge W. T. Lowe. The hearing, continued from last Saturday, stems from writ of habeas corpus by W. H. Long, attorney. Huie has been jailed in Madison County, Huntsville, since arrest by local police after the burglary.

Must Muzzle Dogs Edict Issued by Decatur Officials

City officials in Decatur issued an order requiring dog owners to muzzle or confine pets. Violators face fines from 5 to 25 dollars. any unmuzzled dogs off premises will be shot. The action follows an outbreak of rabies with two rabid dogs killed yesterday.

All Recruits Move From Fort McClellan To Camps

Recruits en route from Fort McClellan transferred via L and N Railroad to Decatur and then by truck to camps. First 50 men arrived on Train No 2 with several thousand pounds of gear for Camp No 1 Cheatham Knob. Additional contingents to Decatur as details finish with May 29 next draft expected.

Revival Planned at Southside Church

A revival campaign is planned at the Southside Baptist church starting the third Sunday in June. Rev. J. D. Pickens announced the event, with Rev. L. L. Hearn of Boyles leading. The two week campaign will likely offer services twice daily.

Huntsville Car Stolen. Suspect Sought in Decatur Alert

Huntsville police notified Decatur officers to watch for a Chevrolet sedan stolen Thursday night in Huntsville. The thief, described as a 165 pound man with sandy hair in a brown suit, is believed to have brought the car to Decatur. No trace of the vehicle was found locally.

Muscle Shoals Bill Aims at Wide Tennessee Valley Development

The Muscle Shoals proposal would improve social amenities and build power plants reservoirs and irrigation projects. It authorizes private fertilizer production nitrate plant leasing power sales to entities and required board oversight plus a Cove Creek Dam across Clinch River. Alabama and Tennessee receive five percent of gross receipts and the President would seek further legislation to maximize flood control navigation power and reforestation.
