Cloudy with scattered thunder showers expected this afternoon and tonight. Alabama University student Bob Sittason from Decatur and local residents frequent events. tax sale postponed from June 1 to June 10. Community visits, church notices, census forms, and local hospital news fill this bulletin from Decatur and Morgan county.
May 12 London report: US Britain and France push a plan to give Bonn fuller diplomatic voice and control over exit visas and customs while unfreezing internal controls. Allied commissions would veto conflicts with occupation aims. France resists loosening controls and proposes pooling French German steel coal with possible international oversight of heavy industry. Conference to conclude tomorrow.
In Birmingham, Lewis Marston, 22, was sentenced to 10 years and one day for participating in a $3,500 loan company hold up. Circuit 2 Alta L. King ordered the term to deter probation, with appeal unlikely to yield release. Two Birmingham men were arrested in Louisiana.
Three real estate transfers in Decatur total nearly 40 000 dollars. Dr J Y Hamil buys the Broadus home on East Lafayette Street. B Denbo purchases the corner lot at Second Avenue East and Second Street from Mrs Julia B Edwards. J E Wilder buys the White Jewelry building. deeds list Broadus home at 21000 dollars, White building at 18000 dollars, and the Second Avenue lot at 10000 dollars. Denbo plans to use the adjacent lot for building. Ed White Jr says the sale was a business move.
Birmingham announces consolidation of The Birmingham Post and The Age Herald into a six day morning daily The Birmingham Post Herald to debut May 15 edited by James E. Mills. The News handles business affairs. staffs remain separate. 25 jobs cut with some moves to the new plant and others to the News.
Morgan county Boy Scouts launch the 1950 Morgan district camporee at Camp Frazier with over two hundred Scouts checking in at 1:00 PM Friday and around 180 Cub Scouts joining in a related program as part of 12 camporees sponsored by the Tennessee Valley Council.
The state Democratic committee completed its canvass of the May primary with notes that Russell county returns were unusual and a contest may be filed. Gordon Persons won the governor race with 402,187 votes, Phil Hamm second, as the committee reviewed district results and possible impacts from the Russell county totals.
Bids for eleven B Line projects totaling about 750000 were filed with the Alabama Highway Department in Montgomery. The Athens to Hartselle U S 31 maintenance job avoids widening or changing the route while others cover plant mix on U S 80 and U S 31 across Limestone Morgan Calhoun Etowah Dallas and Benton counties.

Government mediation efforts resume as a national rail strike widens layoffs and violence. Nearly 200000 workers idled across rail and other industries with dispatchers reporting sporadic shootings and picket line clashes. Carriers suspend service on Southern and New York Central routes while Pennsylvania, Santa Fe and others issue layoff notices.
The Decatur high school band, directed by Carl Schwachow, performs Monday at 8 PM in Riverside Auditorium. The program includes quartets, Oak, regular band numbers, The Red Mill, a Victorian Herbert womp on, Auditorium Session and Battle Hymn Of The Republic.
Owen Mac Owen is jailed in Morgan county on a murder charge for allegedly shooting Grady Bert Terry at about 10 40 P M Sunday following a cafe dispute. The weapon a .45 caliber Colt government model pistol was recovered. An 18 year old Decatur girl Ann Wright was released on 500 bond as a material witness.
Four gunmen wearing gas masks robbed $15 000 from Brinks payroll in the Bigelow Sanford carpet plant pay room in Thompsonville Connecticut. Guards were beaten and hospitalized. Robbers fled in an automobile as state and local police searched the plant. The money was payroll for 300 third shift workers.
Ingalls to launch two identical 100 foot oil barges at 1 P M built for Cuba company Cia Nacional Trabajos Maritimos S A. After launch the barges go to New Orleans then to Havana Cuba. No special ceremonies planned.
Mounting layoffs of railroad workers and coal miners mark early effects of a four day railroad strike. Eastern cities from Buffalo to Harrisburg see shuttered yards and reduced train service as workers face idle periods and plant layoffs.
Large crowds braved rain to attend the big electrical exposition in Decatur. Puppets, science demos, and talking tors thrilled spectators as three shows unfolded starting 8:30 with prizes and demonstrations of labor saving devices.
Hundreds of dollars will go to Alabama farm youths at the Birmingham fat stock auction where prize calves from yesterday’s judging will be sold. Carolyn Blalock of Cullman county said last year’s sales brought her 1930 dollars. The 1950 grand champion Hereford, Fatty, weighs 1008 pounds and is owned by Charles Lee Stallings Jr of Stevenson. Reserve champion Aberdeen weighed 1182 pounds and was exhibited by Keenan Wood. Shorthorn Cherry Boy, owned by Bailey of Nauvoo, also placed among top contenders.
