A 27 year old Renlap man Ernest H McCay was charged with raping a Birmingham woman last week. Detective W J Haley said McCay was arrested yesterday. The woman said McCay attacked her after she agreed to take him to a Birmingham address.
The traveling Electrical Exposition stops at American Legion Field in Decatur tomorrow under the Decatur Electric Department sponsorship. A 9:45 a.m. kickoff features a science show and walking talking refrigerator with a 2:15 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. program. The event includes free displays of modern electric equipment for home and farm use, kitchen demonstrations, black light shows, and puppet segments.

A housing need survey is being conducted in Decatur for the City housing administration. About 20 workers from the Economic Research Agency are checking the city’s housing needs. The survey began May 8 and will be completed in about ten days or two weeks. Public cooperation is requested.

Ed Mac Owen, 36, faces charges for the Sunday night shooting of Grady Bert Terry in Lawrence County. Probate Judge Isaac Johnson’s office says papers accusing the case operator have been obtained and await judge signature. Owen is held in a Morgan County jail for Lawrence officials and was brought to Decatur late Tuesday.
President Truman announced a national push for low-cost public power from major rivers, opposing private power groups. He spoke at Grand Coulee Dam dedication about creating a Columbia Valley Administration to operate federal projects and boost rural electrification. Philadelphia May 11 The AFL through its executive council served notice to employers it will strive for higher wages. President William Green announced at a press conference that the council urged nations to pursue higher wages to boost purchasing power and broaden worker benefits.
Phillip J. Hamm withdrew from the gubernatorial race and backed Gordon Persons without a runoff. In a statewide radio broadcast Hamm said his friends believe the leading candidate will win a majority in the runoff, though he did not quit the fight.
About 350 Gordon Persons supporters met in Montgomery to map a last push for his campaign. The gathering occurred amid uncertainty over a runoff and with runner up Hamm yet to declare intentions. Vernon Merritt said the group aimed to solidify county by county organization and unite behind Persons.
Gov. James E. Folsom announces Hamm yielded the nomination to Persons, ensuring an election by the Democratic nominee as Alabama rules. James McBride a 20 year old from Hillsboro escaped injury when his 1949 Plymouth left Alabama 36 near Courtland turning over in a ditch at about 6 30 P M on slick wet roads. He was knocked out and thrown from the car but sustained no cuts bruises or broken bones. About 800 damage to the auto and the highway patrol investigated the crash led by Lt H E Black with Officers Lionel Freeman and L S Bryant.
