Fair afternoon and night with cooler southeast tonight and Saturday, highs around 69 and 52 inches rainfall for 24 hours up to this morning. Local items include guest plans, illness updates, a Decoration Day observance, and military appointments for 15 colleges in the Third Army area.
Washington May 7 The Air Force readied buying orders for 2 727 new warplanes awaiting President Truman's signal to start a 70 group peacetime air force. Senate approved 74 to 3 a $3 233 200 000 airpower expansion fund. House Senate conference to resolve minor differences and send to the White House for action.
In Jackson Mississippi on May 7 Governor Wright said Senator George of Georgia and Governor Thurmond of South Carolina are equally favored for the Democratic presidential nomination. He would support either, praising their service to state and nation. Thurmond will keynote the Dixie states rights parley in Jackson starting Monday. Georgia leaders reportedly plan to push for southern electors and a wheeling strategy.
Circuit Solicitor Emmett Perry said Gov. James E. Folsom requested a grand jury investigation into how absentee ballots were counted in Jefferson County. The governor urged halting the count until polls closed at 6 pm after news showed Folsom and Hamm trailing.
AP tally from 244 of 260 boxes shows W. W. Malone of Athens leading with 18,421 votes. Carl Mooring of Huntsville trails with 14,650 while Knox McRae of Decatur has 13,492 in the race for two district delegate posts.
Zelma Parker of Decatur junior high has been chosen as an exchange teacher to Leeds England, replacing Eileen A Trafford. Walter M Jackson, Decatur superintendent, announced the selection approved by both American and British committees. Parker applied in February and was interviewed in Alabama before notification from Paul E Smith of the US Office of Education.
Alabama's 26 delegate slate to the Democratic National Convention shows a strong walkout trend if civil rights plank is adopted. Returns from the Tuesday primary indicate 14 of 26 at large and district leaders favor a walkout, eight oppose, and four undecided, with all 11 Presidential electors pledged against voting for Truman.
Senator Olin D Johnston calls the idea of South Carolina backing Truman fundraising delusions of grandeur. He warns he and other delegates will not support Truman at the Philadelphia convention. Truman offered no comment on Alabama primary results and anti Truman electors.
President Truman held a cabinet session on the railroad crisis as time ran short before a strike. John R. Steelman met with the heads of the union brotherhoods, with a second meeting set for 4 P.M. Eastern. Attorney General Clark said seizure power under the 1916 law remains a last resort and would require a public release of the opinion.
Government officials met at the White House with Presidential Assistant John R. Steelman after a renewed effort to avert a crippling rail strike set for 6 am Tuesday. Three operating unions and brotherhood presidents attended as carriers warned of embargoes and possible layoffs for non striking workers amid the labor dispute.
Gov. James E. Folsom ordered an investigation into subversive activities in Alabama. He directed Public Safety Director Jake Mitchell to compile names of persons or organizations seeking change of government by nonpeaceful means and to forward them to the attorney general or circuit solicitors for prosecution under a 1947 law.
In Washington on May 7 the Senate eyed a two year extension for Lilienthal and other atomic energy commissioners. Vandenberg and Taft signaled support to avert controversy with Hickenlooper Johnson plans to advance a bill extending terms from 1948 to 1950. Taft indicated acceptance if committee approves two year extension.
Funeral plans are set for W J Ayers 47 of Holly Pond after a Thursday morning crash three miles east of Cullman on the Guntersville Highway. Ayers died at Cullman hospital at 11:30 a m. His daughter Mary Joyce Ayers and Miss Audrey Clark were in critical condition with severe head injuries and facial trauma. Three injured truck passengers were treated and dismissed. The Ayers car, a 1936 Chevrolet, collided with a Rural Electrical Association construction truck at a Y intersection. Ayers was driving to Cullman. construction truck carried metal crossbars. The injured were transported by Cullman Drinkard’s and Moss-Service ambulances. Funeral arrangements to be announced. He is survived by his widow, three daughters, four sons, and his parents.
Palestine diary reports that the Haganah seized two Arab villages between Nazareth and the Sea of Galilee and captured a hill overlooking Safed. In battles near Sejera and El Edha, Arab losses were reported high with several Jewish deaths and many wounded. Reports mention clashes near Mishmar and shelling of Ramat Naftali.
The Tennessee Valley Authority faced sharp questioning as the House appropriations committee rejected a $54 million steam electric plant proposal, with Rep. Gordon Clapp and others pressing TVA over costs and repayment. TVA officials argued the project would improve efficiency and net income, while critics warned it set a dangerous precedent for federal competition and added debt.
