Partly cloudy this afternoon tonight and Friday with scattered thundershowers in the northwest. Temperatures little changed with gentle to moderate northeast winds on the coast. Local items include church events at Westminster Presbyterian and Sixth Avenue Church of God, hospital admissions, fire in a basement, and various community updates in Decatur and nearby areas.
In Ohio Akron area results tighten Taft's 23 contested GOP delegates lead as late tabulations show Taft 15 and Stassen 8 with 4 precincts left. Taft votes total 30 unopposed delegates. district contests mostly favor Taft, while Stassen trails in statewide delegate-at-large races.
Morgan county chooses Sherrill Wil le as head of the Republican Committee for four years replacing Red Williams who did not seek reelection. Officers named include J D Bush secretary H G Wells Dennis McLendon J R Bush H Yarbrough James Norton and others as beat committeemen with delegates selected for district and state conventions.
Frank Yaney, chairman of the Morgan district camping and activities committee, will direct the Scout Camporee starting May 21 at Camp Frazier. He served in the same post last year. Ed Price of troop 19 will be activities director overseeing Saturday field events. The camporee is a camping demonstration open to the public.
With 43 boxes reporting, Cullman Democrats favor Senator John Sparkman over Phillip Hamm by a three to one margin, Sparkman 2741 to 866. Gordon Persons leads Public Service Commission with 2781 over Mack Heatherly 1100. Others include Rushton over Lamberth for national committeeman, Griffith over rivals for convention delegate, Manasco leading in Congress race, Hart elected tax assessor, Calvert tops tax collector candidates, and coroner J Grady Moss wins 2787 to 1796.
A cease fire order for Katamon in Southern Jerusalem was extended indefinitely as truce efforts faltered. Israeli forces reported Arab assaults near Yehudia while Haganah gunned positions near Ramat Naftali. Beirut said Lebanon stayed neutral as Judea faced shellfire and a provisional capital formed near Tel Aviv.
Senator Glen Taylor of Idaho was convicted in Birmingham for disorderly conduct tied to segregation laws. He received 180 days in jail with probation after a $50 fine and costs, and an appeal was filed. Wallace criticized the verdict as undermining liberal aims and the Constitution.
Mrs. T. L. McRae of 316 Gordon Drive aged 73 voted for the first time yesterday. Her sons Claude McRae sought a taxi permit, Knox McRae ran for district eight Democratic National convention delegate, and G Clyde McRae competed for Morgan County Board of Education.
The official vote counted for Morgan this afternoon as 61 boxes in the county gave Sparkman a strong margin in his race against four opponents. Sparkman won 6284 votes, Hamm 765, Maxwell 168, Pruitt 36, Harlin 18. County Democratic chairman Rutledge S. Thomas called the meeting as the committee processed box after box until 2 30 this afternoon.
Senator John Sparkman departed Huntsville at 5:30 a.m. Wednesday after winning the Democratic nomination against four opponents. He returns to join the senate debate on educational measures he has long championed.
Gordon leads with 4855 votes over Williams 729 while Heatherly trails with 30 of over 7000 cast in the primary. Decatur Jaycees heard reports from delegates at the Mobile state convention where Charles H. Parker was elected to one of four vice president posts. Delegates from Decatur included Frank Whisenant Billy Steed Dick Allis Ned Frazier Charles Parker and Sam Evans. Parker won 103 of 109 votes for the North Alabama vice presidency. The national convention will meet in Philadelphia June 3 4 and 5.
Voters in Decatur rejected a five cent fare hike and approved allowing more than one taxi operator. The unofficial straw vote also showed support for adding another cab company, with leaders like Speake and Poole backing Negro taxi proposals for Negro passengers. Council President Rutledge Thomas noted no fare raise would be granted this year.
Lawrence county voters backed Senator John Sparkman over Phillip Hamm 3226 to 62 percent in the Democratic primary. Unofficial reports from 28 boxes show Hamm trailing. Other county races saw Gordon elected chairman of the Public Service Committee, Rushton favored for national committeeman, Malone leading district delegates, Moody defeating Almon for Superintendent, Jackson winning tax assessor, and runoffs possible for the board of revenue in district one.

Rishville Indiana May 5 Philip Willkie 28 son of Wendell Willkie won a decisive victory in Indiana primary securing the gubernatorial nomination ensuring the first political success of his career starting from the bottom of the ladder and defeating rivals by a wide margin.
Limestone County voters backed Senator John Sparkman in a heavy margin with 3069 to 255 as 21 of 23 boxes reported. Other outcomes included Marion Rushton winning Democratic national committeeman, W. W. Malone leading district delegates, and Floyd Johnson top in superintendent of education. Runoffs were possible in two Board of Revenue races. Charles E Leopard won district two revenue, while George Braley defeated Robert A Tinnon for Board of Education.
Governors from Mississippi and neighboring states along with delegations from eight others prepare to attend a May 10 conference in Jackson. Keynote speaker will be Gov. Strom Thurmond of South Carolina. Organizers expect about 1 000 attendees as they map strategy against President Truman's civil rights program ahead of the Democratic national convention in Philadelphia.
In Birmingham on May 5, early returns show states' rights electors ahead as President Fruman and civil rights policies lose support among Alabama Democrats. Sparkman leads Hamm in Senate race 103,768 to 24,232 with over half the boxes counted. party unity over civil rights remains unsettled.

In Alabama the 28 candidates for electoral delegates show a split with 11 leading contenders from the anti Truman anti civil rights faction and 21 of 28 pledging not to vote for Trumian. The state supreme court allowed electors to vote for any candidate. Delegates to the national convention include a 26 man walkout pledge group opposed by anti Truman factions.
