Partly cloudy and warm with scattered showers forecast in the north this afternoon and Tuesday. Community updates list Cheatham family members visiting Decatur, Florence and Austinville, with various relatives and residences. Local notices include a jail and court briefing, PTA meeting plans, a rabies test result, and a GOP rally scheduled for Morgan County.
The House Armed Services Committee approved a two year peacetime draft bill by 28 to 5 paving the way for a formal House vote next week. Defense Secretary Forrestal called the measure excellent citing urgent need to grow the armed forces. Army Secretary Royall said the plan is acceptable to all services and unity over training ages remained unsettled.
Funeral services for Albert Sidney Byars Jr. 28 who drowned Sunday afternoon while vacationing in Panama City Florida will be held Tuesday in Moulton. He was caught in under tow while swimming and died after attempts at first aid and an iron lung. Rites will be at the parents home at 3 p.m. with Mr Thornberry of Lawrenceburg officiating. Interment will be in Moulton cemetery Highsmith in charge. Byars associated with Arrow Supply Birmingham recently transferred to Dothan. He was the only child of Dr and Mrs Byars and served with distinction in World War II. He came from Lawrence County and was linked to Chitwood North Alabama families. See TRAGEDY on Page 2.
Alabama will start choosing participants tomorrow in a fierce battle pitting Southern Democrats against President Truman and his civil rights program. The June 1 runoff seems virtually certain as a majority vote is needed for election. The contest centers on 26 national convention delegate posts and 11 presidential elector positions amid a party split.
In Chicago on May 3 a back to work trickle appeared at six week old packing house strike lines. Pickets increased at gates while police stood by. Non-strikers passed through with no incident as CIO officials said returning workers were not in the packing union. Spokesmen noted some strikers returned to work and Armour reported slow gains in staffing as Swift Wilson Armour and Cudahy raise all plant pay by nine cents an hour.
Morgan county officials were urged to telephone The Daily with returns as soon as tallying ends in their boxes. The Daily and Station WMSL planned rapid broadcasts of results and an extensive get out the vote effort aimed at a turnout near 8 500 to 10 000 by polling hours.
Jews denied British reports and insisted Syrian and Lebanese armies invaded Northern Palestine. British redeployed about 1,000 troops to Haifa and prepared for a 48 hour truce in Jerusalem while negotiating longer city wide terms. Official word said no Syrians were seen on the Northern front even as Arab forces threatened a broader action.
Lauderdale county officials search for a Black man identified as Cash Bowlin 39 Rogersville who rode in a Wallace Cab taxi driven by Hershel Phillips and allegedly attacked him during a dispute about payment The incident occurred about 10 PM Sunday in Rogersville Phillips was struck above the stomach with injuries reported to involve the liver kidney and lung at Limestone County Hospital Athens Alabama
Voters are asked if the city should grant additional taxi operator permits in Decatur Alabama. The sample ballot instructs voters to mark Yes or No for this decision. The text includes garbled lines attempting to present the question and choices.
The Supreme Court ruled 6-0 that restrictive real estate agreements barring colored persons from all white neighborhoods cannot be enforced by state or federal courts. Chief Justice Vinson authored opinions upholding property owners’ rights while noting such covenants, if voluntarily adhered to without court enforcement, do not violate law.
A liquor salesman, B. M. Blue Marion of Calvert's distilleries, charged ABC Administrator Frank Bunkley tried to oust him in favor of a Folsom administration ally. Bunkley denied the claim and said Calvert's must change its advertising in Alabama, which the board had deemed objectionable.
Tornadoes and violent winds swept seven states over the weekend killing at least 19 people and injuring more than 100. West Virginia and Kentucky bore the brunt with six and two deaths respectively, while Oklahoma Missouri Kansas Illinois and Indiana also reported fatalities and extensive property damage.
Berlin May 3 AP The British control commission for Germany imposed strict limits on policy news and activities. Maj Gen Nevil C D Brown John deputy military governor ordered staff to refuse press statements unless requested by the commissions press branch citing the British official secrets act. Informed British sources said the move followed officials sharing information with correspondents by phone during tense Berlin Russian traffic talks. Several reporters protested the notice as a press restriction.
Ohio Republicans head to the May 4 primary with Senator Robert A. Taft and Harold E. tafting a close delegate race over 23 of Ohio's 53 nominating votes. Up to 700000 voters are expected as Taft backers claim possible 51 of Illinois' 56 votes on first ballot and shift key delegations at the national convention.
The monthly report for the Decatur branch State laboratory lists tuberculosis with 210 examinations and 36 positive results, rabies 23 examinations and 11 positive, typhoid 45 examinations and 1 positive, malaria 110 examinations with none positive, venereal diseases 1398 examinations with 129 positive, diphtheria 18 examinations and 1 positive, intestinal parasites 25 examinations, water 157 examinations, milk 152 examination and miscellaneous 7 examinations.
The Southern Negro Youth Congress deplored Birmingham segregation laws at closing session while pledging to continue the fight and denying ties to the communist party. The weekend saw arrests including Sen Glen Taylor and four others for segregation violations, with Taylor charged after attempting to enter a negro church meeting via a prohibited entrance. He left for Washington and planned to return Tuesday to face charges.
Two men die in a gunfight in Courtland Gana section Lawrence County as cafe operator Sim Holderfield and Chief of Police W H McCormack kill each other. Three bystanders are wounded while Elton Sherill and taxi driver Duke Wann are treated, with one in critical condition. Police say both gunmen fired from their own weapons and the feud began after Holderfield’s son’s arrest a week earlier.
J W Duncan of Hartselle 3 is held in Morgan county jail on a charge of leaving the scene after a collision with a car driven by I J Nunn of Moulton. Mrs Nunn suffers two fractured ribs and abrasions and was taken to Hartselie clinic. The wreck occurred Sunday night on Highway 31 south of Cedar Creek Bridge between Falkville and Tellege. Patrolman Vinson investigated the accident.
