The case centered on Burl West accused of reckless driving after allegedly handcuffing to a truck for 45 minutes during a double wreck on U S highway 31 on Lacon mountain. Judge Norwood returned a not guilty verdict Friday as testimony described traffic control by Patrolman Griffin and deputies.
Morgan county pursues higher attendance as a Daily survey finds about 100 white children ages 7 to 16 out of school in the county. Across Alabama this could mean roughly 6,700 school age youths missing education.

The Mutual Savings Life Insurance Co. plans to issue 88 000 shares to the public as part of greater capitalization. President Melvin Hutson says the home owned firm will end the year with about 1 million dollars in capital and surplus. The company operates in Alabama and Georgia offering ordinary and industrial life contracts.
Alabama's Democratic voters prepare for a pivotal primary that tests support for civil rights. About 400,000 party members will choose 26 delegates to the national convention from 84 candidates, with 28 pledging to walk out if a civil rights plank appears, and 21 of 28 pledging not to back Truman if the plank is adopted.
W P Parker president of the Decatur Junior Chamber of Commerce was elected vice president of the Alabama Junior Chamber of Commerce at a Mobile two day convention. Other new officers include Billy Leavell and Logan Taylor with several regional leaders named as officers and directors. Decatur Jaycees attended and nominated Parker at a meeting held earlier.
Voter faces two choices on a ballot. One asks whether to grant additional taxicab permits in Decatur Alabama to another operator. The second asks if the City Council should approve a taxicab rate range in Ny Gotha. The text shows crossed marks near Yes or No options.
County polls open Tuesday at eight in 61 boxes with a goal of 10 000 ballots. Campaigns urge qualified voters to cast ballots as committees civic clubs schools Boy Scouts and radio station WMSL support a strong turnout. Residents follow Truman civil rights debate as influences enter county race.
Ten Kiwanians return from Florence where they presented a traveling gavel to the Kiwanis club as part of a friendly division competition. The Decatur group listed include Redus Collier J W Clapton Clyde Hendrix Mack Livingston John Harlow Ben Daniels Frank Sibert Dwight Mixson Joe Calvin Jimmy Williams Dick Still and Sam Malone. Decatur earned 1200 points in the contest and Florence plans to pass the gavel to another first division club.
Lawrence Cummings Jr. of Franklin County wins 100 dollars as grand champion calf. Billy Maples of Limestone County takes reserve grand champion and 50 dollars. Franklin and Lawrence counties earn multiple prizes as Madison Cullman and Morgan steer winners are noted. Hereford and Shorthorn divisions recognized with several awards.
Dwight L. Mixson, longtime Decatur group manager for Southern Bell, will become group manager in Tuscaloosa effective June 1. W. L. Hinds moves from Tuscaloosa to Decatur as district manager. Mixson has chaired local civic groups and served on multiple boards, while Mrs. Mixson has led community work including crippled children and war bond drives. He will complete 25 years with the company next December.
Voters may set a county record as Morgan County ballots push participation to new heights. Decatur hosts the largest election night party with rapid returns broadcast by WMSL and coverage from The Daily office. Rural polls close at 5 pm and urban at 6 pm, delaying results.
Senator John Sparkman spoke at a homecoming in Hartselle amid a large crowd pledging to oppose Truman civil program. He tied federal anti-lynching and anti-poll taxes to reform, recalled Lodge force bills and Morgan filibuster, and praised local civic leaders while noting his Alabama roots and long day of campaigning.
In Birmingham Alabama on May 1 Senator Glen Taylor Idaho was charged with breach of peace after he allegedly tried to enter a meeting via a Negro entrance and refused a white entrance. Police Chief Floyd Eddins had him placed in a patrol car and jailed at headquarters with a $300 bond.
