Scattered showers and thundershowers expected today across the state with cooler conditions on the north. Decatur cotton quotes middling at 35 and strict low at 34. Cottage prayer service tonight at 7 30 at 306 Eleventh Avenue West led by Rev. J F Dunlap. Local residents busy with hospital moves and community events.
A $25 000 damage suit over the death of Henry Jones Jr. after a Piper Cub crash near the Lawrence county courthouse was heard in circuit court with Judge Newton Powell presiding Mrs Audrey Jones sues Hubert and Robert Seabourne and others The crash Easter Sunday last year left Seabourne severely burned and Donald Montgomery 17 injured and seeking permanent injury relief Several cases were continued to the next term while civil matters proceed this week and criminal cases are set for the second week.
The House Agriculture Committee voted 16 to 10 to shelve all bills to repeal federal taxes on oleomargarine. Chairman Hope said no repeal bills will reach the floor this session. Some members may try a discharge petition needing 218 signatures, which is uncertain. The fight mirrors a butter versus oleo debate.
The Florence State Teachers College glee club with about 50 voices visits Decatur on Thursday. They perform at ten o'clock in the morning at the Decatur venue and at noon at the Kiwanis club event.
Navy veteran Richard E. Cox and his wife Eleanor with children Jimmy and Junior remain in room 986 at the Waldorf Astoria on Park Avenue. Hotel officials say the room is booked for others but will allow the family to stay another day while Cox, seeking veterans housing, plans to pay $40 monthly and send the balance to Mayor O'Dwyer. Cox has refused to leave, citing lack of suitable housing.
Washington reports Congress prepared for four key votes including rent controls extending to 1950 and rolling back wartime increases. Rep Helen Gahagan Douglas proposed to erase voluntary lease hikes, while debate focused on local rent board power and potential partisan opposition.
Montgomery Alabama March 16 Governor Folsom invited June to visit Alabama after meeting in California in 1946 and being asked to return with a tele grams to New York where he was entertained by Barbizon models. He replied he has not yet answered.
The European recovery conference voted unanimously to include Western Germany in the Marshall plan scope. Portugal proposed including Generalissimo Franco's Spain, praising its cultural contributions and agricultural resources. The plan will be funded by the U S Treasury and forms part of four recovery points.
Picket lines formed at the nation s meat packing plants today as 100 000 CIO employees were called out on strike despite President Truman s last minute effort to settle the wage dispute The stoppage affects about 140 major and independent plants and could cut the nation s meat supply in half About 150 000 other workers in the meat plants are expected to remain at work and belong to independent unions or the AFL Amalgamated Meat Cutters Union The CIO committee halted the action briefly to seek a board inquiry per Truman s telegram
Stormsewers taxed by heavy rains flood Decatur streets with 2.43 inches fallen by 7:30 AM and water fills Second Avenue. Drainage opened around 7:30, Lee Street spared, but a one foot to twelve foot deep lake forms behind downtown storefronts and tracks become submerged.
President Truman will speak to Congress on world conditions amid rumors of major statements and heightened Russian pressure in Europe. The Senate postponed debate on a 4.7 billion dollar tax cut while Democratic leaders weigh limiting it to 4 billion and await Truman’s remarks.
Eza Van Horn of soft coal operators sought a court appointed third trustee for the miners welfare fund as a pensions dispute fuels a walkout affecting 265000 workers. Van Horn said he would act alone if UMW chief does not join. The stoppage halts 60000 tons daily in major Pittsburgh area mines.

Coroner J. H. Highsmith rules the shooting of a Black man by Hillsboro Officer Jake Claridy as justifiable. The event happened around 6 P M on the Southers Railway right of way near Spence Hardin's store. The victim was killed with a .38 pistol and the body was taken to Reynolds Funeral Home for disposition.
The Associated Press reports moves to draft Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower for the Presidency as supporters push for a convention showing. Leonard Finder notes the public still regards Eisenhower highly though he had declined nomination. Senator Johnston urges Southern Democrats to back Eisenhower for the nomination. Stassen proposes farm talks with Gov. Dewey and hints at a joint conference with farm leaders.
Robert McNelly, Morgan county Red Cross chair, urged committee heads to report collections. Mrs. Georgia Dunn led Lacey's Springs with 60 dollars, five over the quota. About 12,500 dollars has been raised, leaving over 1,000 to meet the county's goal as plans for near week progress were to be made.
An early morning storm in Florence Alabama left about 200 homeless with 75 to 100 homes destroyed or badly damaged and two business buildings heavily damaged. The Red Cross opened an emergency center as the storm cut communications and damaged lines to Sheffield Tuscumbia and nearby towns. No deaths and three injuries were reported.
The Florence Times reports that at 10:15 AM Dwight Mixon of Southern Bell said he could not reach Bell managers in Florence and Sheffield. A crew was sent to address the outage, with restoration expected via alternative lines after the AP wire was cut early but later restored through Nashville.
In the Northwest region heavy rains and strong winds reached Lee where gusts measured up to miles per hour. Clyde Anderson of Tours District Florence reported two businesses destroyed: the Simmons Wholesale Grocery Co warehouse and the Florence Steam Laundry plant.
Representatives from Morgan County high schools will meet at Riversideside School at 10 a.m. Friday to organize Future Teachers of America clubs in county schools. One club already exists at Decatur High School. At the meeting, members will be elected to attend a $1 meeting of Future Teachers America clubs in Birmingham on March 28. Each school club has a teacher sponsor. The National Education Association began the movement to interest high school students in teaching careers.
The CIO International union group in Alabama endorsed a Wallace Taylor presidential ticket. Albert Parsons, chairman, announced the move in Bessemer on March 16.
