Partly cloudy and mild this afternoon tonight and Tuesday with scattered showers Thursday and moderate to fresh southerly winds on the coast. High 70 and low 55 for the 24 hour period. Various hospital moves, voter registrar crowd, lost watch, births and deaths, and church and club events fill a daily bulletin from the region.
Former TVA lawyer L B Bolt testified before a senate committee in Washington supporting a bill to remodel the TVA law. Bolt accused Kefauver and TVA press of pressuring the panel, citing Knoxville News Sentinel editorials as exhibits while Malone warned such editorials would not count as evidence.
Two of three major meat packers Swift & Company and Cudahy Packing rejected arbitration in the wage dispute with the CIO United Packinghouse Workers. Armour & Company had not replied. The union seeks a 20 cent gap resolution and would call a nationwide strike at 12:01 a.m. if not settled.
Sheriff C H Collier of Meriwether County vowed to help three Columbus Ledger-Enquirer reporters pursue justice after they were allegedly drugged and photographed at a Klan meeting. The incident spurred federal and state probes and a call to end the Ku Klux Klan in the region.
A cameo owned by Mrs. Helen Lyle at 202 Seventh Colone W was destroyed by an early morning fire Sunday. A passerby reported the blaze and fire department arrived about 8 10 A M. The origin of the fire was not determined and Gordon Drive reported no additional damage.
Nearly half of the nations soft coal miners stopped work in support of John L. Lewis pension demands. West Virginia Illinois Alabama and Ohio reported thousands idle with no violence. UMW leader Hugh White said the action was a miner protest against operators not meeting pension contracts. Major steel firms noted gold output declines in western Pennsylvania.
Preparations to close the Morgan County Cross fund drive this week are under way led by county chair Robert McNelly and Decatur chair Roy Fite who plan round-up actions. About $1,000 more is needed to reach the $13,500 quota while several committees have not submitted reports and individuals continue to donate to the Red Cross chapter in the courthouse annex.
The State Department said if Italy goes communist it will receive no further U S economic aid. Six workers killed and at least 26 injured in a blast at the International Harvester farm equipment plant in Louisville Kentucky.
