In Gadsden Alabama union organizers battered and driven from the Good year Tire plant last week with police protection. In Chicago a barefoot man, Walter Shiskoski, 48, perched in a high tree refused to come down. Police and fire crews failed to lure him, then he descended himself after explaining his shoes were at the cobbler.
National Works Progress Administration chief Harry Hopkins arrived to join officials from five arid states in drafting relief measures for farmers hit by drought. Proposals include farm to market roads and small dams, with aid for about 83 000 families. State highway patrolmen arrested six drunk drivers during the week end, announced at headquarters. Morgan Limestone and Colbert each had two arrests for driving while intoxicated. Decatur faced furnace like heat for three days with temperatures at 106 107 degrees the highest in the state. The city saw a 78 degree low last night as residents struggled to sleep. By 11 30 this morning the mercury reached 102 and 103 by noon at the weather bureau.
Montogmery June 30 The Weather Bureau reported temperatures above 100 across about a dozen spots in Alabama. No rainfall aided drought areas yesterday while detailed drought data await release at 9 a m tomorrow under weekly weather and crop survey rules.
In North Carolina the G men and local solicitor probe a band of hooded night riders that assaulted residents near Clarendon. Victims include Bertha Fowler and her daughter,持 with heads shaved and floggings. six victims testified to a grand jury, with more crimes anticipated as jurors prepare for August term.
Miami authorities announced there would be no further investigation into the death of Allen Edwin McGraw III 21 a former Birmingham resident shot in his Miami apartment. Officials say the pistol was owned by McGraw and his fingerprints were found on it. He had been despondent after a friend’s death in a car accident. He died en route to the hospital and his bride Mildred Richards whom he married four weeks earlier found him. Funeral plans were not set and the body was expected to be sent to Birmingham.
Young McGraw son of A E McGraw Jr of Austinville Illinois was a 35 year railroad worker who had lived in Decatur five years though the youth never resided there. The bride of four weeks was nearby when the shot rang out and her husband died in the building. AP dispatches quote Miami officials on the wound and funeral plans are noted.
Chicago police seek James D. Britt of Stevens Point Wisconsin in the double slaying of Mrs Florence Thompson Castle 24 a tavern entertainer beaten to death in a hotel room. In Ogden Utah Adam Snyder 62 and his wife Mabel Scott Snyder 52 were killed in their beds as their granddaughter watched. The victims were beaten with a pick handle and a visitor Grace Mortensen 35 was wounded.
In Chicago investigators renew questions with a handwriting expert to compare a lipstick note found in the victim’s hotel room with suspects. Sidney Schaps, 32, a North Side cafe host and alleged friend of Flor ence Thompson Castle, faces further questioning after a lie detector test. Schaps denies threats he warned to the victim and says he drove her to a meeting with James Thompson from Wilkes-Barre.
