A Trailways bus carrying about 40 passengers overturned on the Birmingham Syla cauga Highway about 20 miles southeast of Birmingham. Mrs. Minnie Morris of Talladega, about 50, was killed. Two injured passengers, Mrs. Lilla Padgett of Goodwater and Dorothy Suber of Washington, D C, were hospitalized in Birmingham.
A Decatur woman, Janie Blankenship, escaped serious harm after a gust hurled her truck into Flint Creek after striking two guard posts on Highway 67. She was treated at Bank Street Hospital for neck injuries and described the crash as miraculous.
A tornado near Philadelphia Mississippi damaged homes and farms within four miles injuring nine people. Seven members of a single family were hurt including Amos McClelland’s wife and five children hospitalized along with Mary Seal and Mrs. Alice Sigrest. Kate Sigrest among the seriously injured.
Jeff Mitchell 29 and his wife Pauline 21 are jailed in Morgan County on murder charges after statements to police reveal a fight with John Wesley Smith 56 over paying for whiskey ended with Smith found beaten on the Tennessee River bank Monday afternoon.
The Alabama highway patrol reported a severe windstorm about 20 miles south of Montgomery with multiple tornado funnels seen in the area. About eight people were injured and taken to a Montgomery hospital, with condition unclear. The Weather Bureau logged a tornado near Evergreen between Montgomery and Mobile, and Conecuh County Sheriff James M. Brock described a funnel 100 to 200 yards wide carrying roofing tin.
