Annual Camp Meeting Association opens its 56th gathering at an open air site just south of Hartselle. Fred Davis age 56 of Birmingham and his nephew Lester King 40 of West Palm Beach were killed when their car hit a tree near Bradford. Four year old Mary Esquire died after entering a road from Sunday School. Sailor Marcario Damaso Pimentil Damaso 29 from Whiting Field Fla was crushed when his car left a curve in Escambia County. The coroner described the Brighton accident as unavoidable.
Investigations continue into a ten day burglary surge in Hartselle Morgan County. Sidney Lee Swopes Jr a 20 year old negro remains jailed in Decatur for questioning with no charges filed yet. Loot totaling under 200 dollars from six stores is tied to the case as authorities suspect a single suspect or group. Morgan County sheriff deputies assist in the probe.
Silli man Evans, 61, Nashville Tennessean president publisher, died in his sleep of a heart attack in Fort Worth. He had attended the funeral of Amon G. Carter and was active in Tennessee politics and the national Democratic party. He had a long heart condition from World War I and was found at 6 30 a.m. by O M Mozier.
A Morgan County prisoner escaped from jail about 5 30 a m and was recaptured by Athens police at 8 30 a m Morgan Sheriff Jimmie Collier and Chief Deputy Richard Hyde had gone to Athens to help after the inmate who had been used as a trusty to haul out garbage fled. Jailer L J Blevins pursued the man to the river and called city police but he jumped a gravel truck bound for Tennessee and was later captured in Athens.
Russia and Western Powers hailed the UNs tenth anniversary session as worthwhile with better diplomatic contacts and signals for Geneva summit talks. Molotov called the meetings positive and a pledge to push disarmament progress was reaffirmed.

Buenos Aires Argentina released 19 Radical party leaders who had been detained since the June 16 revolt against President Juan D Peron. Four other party members remained jailed as police in Eva Peron Buenos Aires province arrested two Communists and two Radical members on charges of spreading rumors. The Radical party holds 14 of 166 Chamber seats. Among the freed is David Michel Torino former director of El Intransigente. The paper was closed in 1950 and Torino jailed for two years on contempt and fraud charges. The Inter American Press Assn awarded him Martyr for Freedom of the Press last year.
HARTSELLE. This area records its first polio death of 1955 as one year old Mary Jane Dobbs dies at the Block Clinic after illness begun June 18. She was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Harris Dobbs of Hartselle. Dennis Powers of Limestone County had a mild polio case in May with one vaccine dose received. no polio cases are verified in Lawrence or Cullman counties. Dobbs had not received the polio vaccine.
Junior Emmett Moates 35 of Moulton drowned while swimming with Rayburn Jones Sunday afternoon in Spring Creek north of Courtland near the Spring Creek Bridge and Edward Rose Fishing camp. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at Jones Chapel with Rev. Wayne Graham officiating and Brown of Moulton handling burial.
At Ramstein Germany a U S Sabre Jet crashed into a British bomber during maneuvers in the Carte Blanche exercise. The bomber Lincoln was torn in two and fell into woods. six crewmen perished while Lt William H Whitten parachuted to safety with minor injuries. Earlier Lt James C Hopper bailed from another Sabre Jet after mechanical trouble as the exercise continued nearby.
