A 1950 black Chevrolet was stolen from Kelley Grubbs at 216 4th Ave NW last night and reported to police today. Nine cases appeared on the city recorder's court docket this morning with charges including disorderly conduct and overparking.
In Tuskegee Alabama the Negro Civic Association urged a boycott of unfriendly white merchants after the Alabama Legislature redrew the city to exclude most Negro residents. Civic leader Charles Gomillion told about 2 000 people the act is gerrymandering and could reduce Negro city voters to about ten. Governor Folsom delayed action out of state.
East and West await concrete replies in U N disarmament talks. Russia rejects U S three stage troop cuts until political settlements are defined. Valerian Zorin demands Western terms and recalls Russia’s offer to admit inspectors if nuclear tests are suspended.
Watkins, former head coach at Lawrence County High School, is appointed principal by the board of trustees pending county board approval. He replaces J E Stephens who moved to Choctaw High School. The school lacks a coach with no replacement yet for Watkins.
President Eisenhower said scientists think an absolutely clean hydrogen bomb could be produced after four to five more years of tests. He noted tests should continue for knowledge gains and peaceful uses, while still hoping for a suspension agreement with Russia.
Senate small business committee investigators, led by Walter Stults, probe reports of gasoline price wars in Alabama. Wiley Messick and Philip Jehle interview oil company officials, jobbers and service station operators in Dothan Birmingham and the Florence Sheffield Tuscaloosa area and possibly Northwest Florida.
A four member Soviet delegation led by Vladimir Lavrov visited Decatur as part of a Southern goodwill tour through Louisiana Mississippi and Alabama. Lavrov said the trip aims to show how Russians live and answer American questions while dispelling misconceptions. The group included Alexander Stratsev Anatoly Myshkov and Yuri Zaitsev who met local residents and discussed peace and mutual understanding. See RUSSIANS On Page 2.
A two day manhunt for Decatur residents Jeff Mitchell and Pauline Mitchell ended when they were captured at Arab Hospital after Pauline was bitten by a poisonous snake. The suspects are jailed in Morgan County on murder charges for the death of 56 year old John Wesley Smith whose body was found on the Tennessee River bank near Keller Memorial Bridge.
The body of 19 year old Paducah Kentucky tugboat deck hand Jerry Dawayne McIntosh was found in the Tennessee River near the south bank early today after he fell from a walkway on the Igert Towing Co. vessel while passing through Decatur Monday. Local drag crews searched the river Monday and yesterday with Brown Funeral Co. shipping the body to Paducah.
Tennessee River reading at Keller Memorial Bridge this morning was 21.23 with a 46 foot rise in 24 hours. Sea level reading 555.45. Yesterday's high 86 and low 64. Noon temperature 84. Forecast partly cloudy with little temperature change today and tonight. Thursday shows scattered afternoon showers and light to increasing southeast winds. Highs around 85, lows near 63.
Frank W. Brewster vice president of the Teamsters Union was convicted on all 31 counts of contempt of Congress for refusing to produce records and answer questions before the Senate Investigations Subcommittee in January. Judge John J. Sirica will sentence later and Brewster remains free on bond.
The fifth victim of a head on collision near Brent Alabama last Sunday died early today at Perry County Hospital. Donald J Valentine of Mobile was the driver of one car. His wife Annie B Valentine was dead at the wreck scene.
North Korea proposed an international conference to remove all foreign troops from Korea and seek a peaceful solution. The U N Command rejected the idea as inappropriate for a military meeting. China backed the proposal in Peiping while denouncing U S policy, saying the armistice talks were failing and warning of a new war if arms remained. Maj Gen Chung Kook Rook accused the U N Allies of wrecking negotiations and blocking peace.
Army Air Force feud over rockets becomes quiet as Col. John C. Nickerson Jr. pleads guilty to 15 charges after a secret session. Dr. Ernst Stuhlinger and soon Dr. Wernher von Braun testify as the case drifts toward Wilson’s 200 mile range limit and a likely sentence.
In a special session the Decatur City Council unanimously adopted a resolution urging Morgan County officials to seek state action to extend the west city limits. The move follows a request by the Decatur Housing Authority with support from Hazel Hamilton of the Davis Hodges estate, bringing 11 families into the annexation plan. The proposed extension would stretch from New Moulton Road 500 feet north to Southern Railroad, east to 13th Avenue, and back to Moulton Street, totaling about 100 acres.
