New York June 23 official Poly clinic statement says only one vertebra transverse process is fractured, not two as previously reported. Schmeling remained hospitalized after the one round knockout by Joe Louis, with the corrected diagnosis noting a single lumbar vertebra fracture and lumbar muscle hemorrhage.
New York reports the Joe Louis versus Max Schmeling heavyweight championship earned a total of 1 015 096 17 from movie and radio rights. Gross receipts reached 1 015 096 17, with 940 096 17 from ticket sales and a net gate of 803 113. Louis earned 40 percent and Schmeling 20 percent of the net. Federal tax was 89 889 57. Louis was paid 321 245 20 for two minutes four seconds. Schmeling 60 622 60.
Following a re examination of x ray plates it was determined the fracture was confined to the left side of the third lumbar vertebra. A A Jaller said Schmeling’s condition was very satisfactory with normal temperature and pulse and he resting comfortably. Joe Jacobs indicated a return match might be pursued despite medical doubts on the punch that damaged Schmeling.
Mr. and Mrs. J Ed Peek of Atlanta perished in a Tuesday morning crash near Austell Georgia when their sedan left the highway and slid into a railroad cut. The car overturned and the couple’s bodies were found at the scene with a two foot plow line around Mrs. Peek’s neck and a blood trail on the road.
A filing with the Supreme Court seeks to disqualify Justices Hugo L. Black and Stanley Reed from ruling on a challenge to the Federal Housing Act. The petition argues Reed’s past role as solicitor general and Black’s support for FHA raise conflicts, noting the record does not show self recusal.
Mattie Grizzard a 92 year old Negro woman died at her home near Cedar Lake on Wednesday. She lived most of her life in Morgan county and was held in the respect of both races. Funeral and burial services will be held Sunday afternoon at Cedar Lake.
John W. Clark a field representative of the American Red Cross arrives tonight to assist veterans at 110 W. Vine Street, working Friday and Saturday. He will help with pension and compensation claims and offer guidance. Mrs. Frank H. Kirby says veterans registered have been invited to meet him during the two days the office is open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Berlin reports Field Marshal Hermann Goering ordered that from July 1 all German men and women, regardless of profession, will be eligible for temporary labor service for the state. Workers will be assigned to suitable jobs under government contract with pay at least as high as the usual rate, keeping usual occupations open.
Cobb county police said kerosene odors in the back seat and two empty cans support a murder theory in the deaths of Mr. and Mrs. J Ed Peek found beside their wrecked car at the bottom of a 52 foot rail cut near Austell Georgia. They traced the couple from Carrollton after 4 pm Monday and noted a half inch rope around Mrs Peek neck. A double funeral service was arranged in Atlanta.
Montgomery June 23. A new Democratic senatorial primary will be called in Shelby Chilton and Autauga counties due to absentee ballot snatching at Clanton June 14. Whether Chilton nominees will face a new primary depends on the county executive committee. The Chilton absentee box with 741 ballots was seized from the Clanton courthouse as officials prepared to count. The five men involved have been identified by sources. no legal action has been taken. The subcommittee weighs options while full state committee decisions loom.
The state visit of King George and Queen Elizabeth to France is postponed to July 19 due to the death early today of the Queen Mother's, the Countess of Strathmore and Kinghorne. The visit had been scheduled for June.
City council members told residents seeking work on the new light plant project that employment is controlled by the contractor. They urged registrants to visit the Ferry street reemployment office, obtain a social security card, and rely on the contractor to fill the construction roles.

Dr. A. H. Collins, Alabama state superintendent of education, told the annual convention of the Association of County Commissioners that public schools need at least four million dollars in additional revenue to maintain an adequate minimum educational program. He said the 1935 appropriation was set on a depression basis and for each child was far less than in 1929-30.
Federal projects in Alabama post adjournment total about 8.17 million dollars with Birmingham housing work for 1,500 workers. Major items include 4.25 million for a low cost slum clearance project, 600 thousand for a Tuscaloosa library, 1.5 million for Warrior and Tombigbee river work, and 163 thousand for a Coosa River bridge. Additional sums fund Mobile harbor, jail in Decatur, and Jasper school building. University of Alabama library will be among the south’s largest colleges.
Probate Judge B Le Malone and county revenue officials moved toward a county jail plan long sought for years. The proposal calls for 55 percent of a $113 000 grant to be raised locally with Morgan county's share about $60 000. The jail, designed by Charles H McCauley, would replace an obsolete facility and improve safety and sanitation for prisoners.
